Martha Ann Femi

Martha Ann (Gilliss) Femi was born May 18, 1944 in Potomac, MD. She was preceded in death by her parents, George G. and A. Margaret (Myers) Gillis and her brother Louis "Bucky" Gilliss.
Martha and her husband Ted of 56 years, met in college and resided in Cumberland. She had 3 daughters, Holly and husband Frank, Heather and husband Terry, Heidi and husband Gene. She has 7 grandchildren, Tysen, Faith, Keegan, Camdyn, Elena, Brynn and Noah, and 1 great-grandson, Roman. Martha was very close to her niece Donna and nephew Martin, who were raised with her.
Martha taught at Parkside Elementary and Braddock Middle through most of her 43-year career. Her greatest legacy was founding the Braddock on Broadway drama club with her dear friend, LeaAnn Alter. For over 15 years, Martha directed, blocked, designed sets, created costumes, and mentored generations of performers. Her influence extended far beyond the classroom, inspiring both her students and colleagues alike.
Martha also loved to be on stage, her favorite show being Fiddler on the Roof. She loved to read mystery novels, knit and go on cruises. She was always proud of grandchildren and loved to hear about their accomplishments.
Our mom was a pillar of strength. She taught us to be strong, independent women. Be tough, but compassionate. Being true to yourself is important, but not at the expense of someone else. Be kind, but have boundaries. Help those who need it and take nothing in return. Hard work matters. Never give up. She lived by example.
There will be a Celebration of Life at Adams Family Funeral Home, P.A., 404 Decatur Street, Cumberland, MD, (www.AdamsFamilyFuneralHome.com) on December 27, 2024 from 2-3 pm, with a service at 3pm, officiated by Philip Thomas.
