Meade - Martin Bergen, 53, died August 14, 2025 at Meade District Hospital. He was born on November 24, 1971 in Mexico, the son of David and Maria (Harder) Bergen.
Martin went to a private school and grew up and worked on his family's homestead in Mexico, tending to livestock and fields. He married Elizabeth Bartsch in August of 1992. The couple was blessed with 12 children.
In 2000, the family moved to the United States, living in Texas, Oklahoma, and Kansas. Most recently, they made their home in Meade. In his adult and family raising years, Martin worked doing anything from welding shops, farm equipment operating, truck driving etc… before starting his own business. He started off selling scrap metal, then buying and selling farm equipment and irrigation pivots.
Some things he enjoyed doing besides work was spending time at the lake with his family and target practice shooting with his guns.
Martin is survived by his wife, Elizabeth of Meade; 11 children, David Bergen and wife Margaret of Montezuma, Martin Bergen and wife Judy of Meade, Henry Bergen and wife Tina of Clovis, New Mexico, Maria Rempel and husband Oscar of Sumner, Texas, Anna Braun and husband Abram of Hugoton, John Bergen and wife Mary of Liberal, Isaac Bergen, Abram Bergen, Agatha Bergen, Peter Bergen, and George Bergen all of Meade; 17 grandchildren; four brothers; and six sisters. He is preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Elizabeth Bergen; and four brothers.
Funeral service will be held at Grace Mennonite Church, 2304 Road 40, Copeland on Monday, August 18, 2025 at 2:00 PM. There will be a graveside service at Fairview Cemetery in Montezuma. Following the graveside service, a private family burial will take place once everyone has left the cemetery. Visitation will be at Swaim Funeral Chapel, Montezuma on Sunday, August 17, 2025 from noon to 6:00 PM. Memorials are suggested to the family in care of the funeral home.
