Martin Alan "Al" Kidd
1947-2025
With deep faith and gratitude for a life well-lived, Al Kidd entered eternal rest on Monday, August 4, 2025, at the age of 78. Al Kidd was born on April 27, 1947, in Alexandria, Virginia, to Edward Stanley and Grace (Moyer) Kidd. A loving husband to his wife Kathy of 57 years, and a devoted father, and Poppy to his family.
Al grew up in Alexandria, Virginia. There, he attended George Washington High School and met his wife, Kathy. He graduated from the University of Virginia in 1969 with a degree in aerospace engineering. While at UVA, he was a re-founding member of Pi Lambda Phi Fraternity and always had very fond memories of his fraternity brothers. He began his career working for the Navy at the David Taylor Model Basin in Carderock, Maryland. He moved to Panama City in 1976 to work with a tenant group testing hovercrafts. Beginning in 1979, he worked as an Aerospace Engineer for the Naval Surface Warfare Center for 33 years, retiring in 2002. Al was later presented with the Hall of Fame Award for his work there in 2010.
Al was a devoted member of St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church for almost 50 years. Through the years, he was a member of the Men's Club, the Association of St. Jude, the finance committee, and the parish council. His faith was reflected in the life he lived. Al and Kathy joined the Krewe of St. Andrews in 2000 and were King and Queen in 2004. Through the Krewe, he made great memories and found friends who became family. In his free time, Al found joy in painting, fishing, and traveling. Above all, his greatest joy came from spending time with his family.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Kathy Kidd; daughters Susan McNiel and Betsy Nelson, and her husband Patrick; grandchildren Samantha McNiel, Amanda Barbosa (Michael), James McNiel (Taira), Kate Nelson, Garrett Nelson, Noah Nelson, Grace Nelson, and Nicholas Nelson; great-grandchildren Charlotte Medlock, Rhett Robinson, Riley Robinson, Benjamin Barbosa, Christopher Barbosa, RJ McNiel, and Leanna McNiel; sisters Barbara Jones, Amanda VanZant, and Barbara Anne Kidd, and numerous family members.
