Martin "Marty" Paul Hoppes

Martin "Marty" Paul Hoppes, a gentle giant who touched the hearts of many, was born on January 24, 1981, in Lansing, MI. He embarked on his journey through life with love and warmth, always ready to lend a hand or provide comfort to those in need. Tragically, Marty passed away on October 4, 2025, at Sparrow Hospice House, after valiantly battling glioblastoma.

Marty was known for his kindness, a trait that defined him. His ability to give the shirt off his back to help others was a hallmark of his character. Friends and family often described him as a calming presence, someone who could light up a room with his smile and generous spirit.

Throughout his life, Marty developed a myriad of interests that highlighted his vibrant personality. He had a deep passion for music, particularly playing the bass guitar, which not only served as a creative outlet but also reflected his love for rhythm and connection. An avid walker, he enjoyed exploring the world around him, and those who knew him well will undoubtedly remember him as a number nerd—a detail that brought a unique charm to his persona.

Marty's legacy will continue through his loving family, who will cherish his memory forever. He is survived by his mother, Penny Hoppes & Doyle; his brother, Marcus Hoppes; his grandmother, Margarete Preston; and a host of uncles and aunts, including Chuck Preston, Dave & Brenita Preston, Randy & Carol Hoppes, Pam & Jake Jacobus, Lori Roe, and Vicki Kemp, along with Bonnie McGraw and June Erickson, who was one of his closest friends.

He was preceded in death by his father, Steven Hoppes; his grandfather, Duane Preston; his grandparents, Charlie & Freda Hoppes; and his aunt, Karen Denis. Each of these individuals held a special place in Marty’s heart, and their memories will forever remain intertwined with his.

A memorial service in honor of Marty will be held on October 15th at 6:30 PM at Hope Evangelical Lutheran Church, located at 10521 Grand River, Portland, MI. This gathering will serve as a tribute to a beautiful soul, allowing family and friends to come together to celebrate the life of a man who gave so much to those around him. As we remember Marty, let us carry forward his spirit of kindness and generosity, ensuring that his legacy continues to resonate in our lives.
