Martin "Marty" Louis Rosen, of West St. Paul, a devoted husband, father, grandfather, teacher, coach, and lifelong mentor, passed away Tuesday, December 3rd surrounded by the love of his family. Marty lived a life defined by quiet strength, humility, generosity, and a deep commitment to helping others. Born to Isadore and Beatrice Rosen, Marty was raised with the values that guided him throughout his life - integrity, responsibility, and hard work.
Marty was a proud graduate of Central High School in
St. Paul, MN, where he earned letters in football, hockey, and baseball, and met the love of his life, Toby Halperin. He went on to graduate from the University of Minnesota Duluth, where he played football and later served as a student graduate coach. In his early professional years, athletics became an important foundation for Marty to influence young lives through leadership and character building. After college, Marty began his teaching and coaching career at Upsala High School in central Minnesota. He led his teams to conference championships in all three seasons he served as coach. He later accepted the position of head football coach and teacher at St. Cloud Cathedral High School. In ten seasons, his teams captured six conference championships, and advanced to the state semifinals. He coached six All-State athletes and one All-American, founded Cathedral's hockey program, and served as assistant baseball coach during a Class A state championship season.
Beyond coaching, Marty worked to improve opportunities for student-athletes across Minnesota. He played a key role in passing legislation that allowed independent schools to join the Minnesota State High School League - a lasting contribution to high school athletics statewide. All the while with Toby and soon to follow, his three children, by his side. In 1977, Marty stepped away from coaching moving the family to West St. Paul to join the family business, Rosen Metals. During his tenure, Marty became involved in financial and operational leadership. Driven by an entrepreneurial spirit, Marty later helped launch Precision Tune POS software at SBS Software before moving into senior financial and executive leadership roles. He ultimately joined Appliance Parts Inc. (API) and later Sundberg, where he served as CFO, helped arrange the sale of API to Sundberg, and remained as a senior executive. What began as a transition became a two-decade career until his retirement in 2013. In recognition of his lasting impact, in 2014 Marty was inducted into Central High School's Hall of Fame, honoring his excellence as both a student-athlete and a leader. He later gave back to the Central High School C Club by serving as President.
Yet for all his professional accomplishments, Marty measured success by one thing above all else: family. He shared 58½ wonderful years of marriage with his beloved wife, Toby, building a life full of love, loyalty, and laughter. Their home was one of warmth, steadiness, and always welcoming - a place where family came first. Marty was an avid golfer who cherished time on the course with friends and family. When his children were young, he loved being on the water - spending countless summer days boating on the Hudson River, creating family memories filled with sunshine, laughter, and lasting friendships.
Some of the family's most treasured traditions began at Boyd Lodge when the children were young and later evolved into an annual family vacation at Grandview Lodge. This tradition continued for more than 20 years, spanning generations that ultimately included his children and their families, including treasured time with his grandchildren. Fittingly, Grandview was also where Marty and Toby honeymooned - a place that remained forever tied to their love story.
He is survived by his children Tim Rosen (Kris), Rob Rosen (Sam) and Leah Driscoll (Ryan); and his cherished grandchildren: Lilia and Ani, daughters of Tim and Kris; Gabby, daughter of Rob and Sam; and Ellie and Molly, daughters of Leah and Ryan. Marty is also survived by his loving sisters; Cindy (Larry), Leeanne (Max), and Shelly (Jerry); his sister-in-law Faye; and many nieces, nephews, and extended family members. He was preceded in death by his parents, Isadore and Beatrice; and his brother-in-law, Shemon. Marty was deeply loved by coworkers, former players, neighbors, classmates, golfing partners, and lifelong friends. His presence made rooms warmer and lives better. He will be remembered not for trophies or titles, but for how he treated others, how he lifted people up, and how he quietly showed those around him what it means to live with integrity. He was truly a great man. His memory will continue to be a blessing to all who knew him.
