Martin Schad Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Ratterman & Sons Funeral Home - Bardstown on Jan. 25, 2024.
Martin P. Schad III (Mickey), 78, passed away peacefully at Indian Creek Nursing Home in Corydon, Indiana. He was preceded in death by his parents, Martin Schad Jr. and Betty Schad. Mickey is survived by a host of family and friends.
Mickey grew up in Louisville and graduated from St. X High School in '63, where he earned four varsity letters in Tennis. He received a Tennis Scholarship from the University of Miami (Coral Gables, Florida) and graduated in 1967.
From a very young age, Mickey was drawn to the sport of Tennis. He accomplished a great deal in the world of Tennis; not only as a player, but also as a coach, volunteer, leader/manager, and friend. His Tennis career provided him with the opportunity to have a large network of friends around the country.
In high school, he won two State singles championships, two State high school doubles championships, and two years National high school doubles championships. He was on the U.S. Junior Davis Cup Team in 1961, 1962, and 1963. He was a member of the National High School Team Champions. Mickey held a total of eight national championships.
While attending the University of Miami, he was a Florida intercollegiate singles and doubles champion and was among the top twenty collegiate players in 1967. After graduating, Mickey joined the Air Force, where he was a U.S. Air Force world champion in singles and doubles in 1969 & 1970.
His additional accomplishments include being the Kentucky State Squash Champion in 1973, 1974, 1975, and 1976, and he was nationally ranked in squash and paddleball in the 1960s and 1970s. He was inducted into the Kentucky State Tennis Hall of Fame and was a member of the St. X Alumni Hall of Honor.
Mickey had extensive experience as a tennis pro and held various positions managing, redeveloping, and consulting at various tennis clubs, and was regarded as "one of the most innovative and creative club managers in the country."
He was active in numerous charitable, civic, and social organizations. Later in life, Mickey focused on giving back. He was passionate about teaching tennis to underprivileged youth in Louisville. He founded and directed Tennis Connections, Inc., a non-profit company focused on tennis instruction and activities for youth. Mickey initiated and directed the Mickey Schad Tennis Camp. He volunteered his expertise in programs at St. Joseph's, Canaan Christian Church, DValle Education Center, Lincoln Elementary School, and Maupin Elementary School.
Most recently, Mickey enjoyed playing cards with friends, listening to music, and regularly getting together with fellow St. X Alumni for lunch. He was a fun-loving guy with a good heart, and he will be dearly missed by many.
A Memorial service will be held on Friday, February 2nd, at Ratterman and Sons Funeral Home, 3800 Bardstown Road, from 4-8 PM with a service at 6:00 PM.
In lieu of flowers, his family asks that contributions be made in Mickey's name to the Sacred Heart Village.
