Marvin Harmes Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Bachelor-Surber Funeral Home - Belleville on Jul. 5, 2023.
Marvin Stanley Harmes
November 7, 1928 – July 3, 2023
Holy child of God, who lived the entirety of his life on earth in loving kindness, with joyfulness, as a man of great integrity and unyielding sincerity.
Marvin committed his life in humble service to God and lead by example at St. John's Lutheran Church in Chester, Nebraska as Usher, Trustee, Elder and Sunday School Superintendent.
Marvin was born in Sidney, Nebraska on November 7, 1928 to Pearl Lillian (Mitchell) and George Albert Harmes. Was baptized on December 9, 1928 and confirmed April 2, 1944 at St. John's Church. Marvin graduated from Chester High School.
From 1948-1950, Marvin served in the United States Army in the 37th Antiaircraft Artillery Gun Battalion at Yokohama Harbor in Japan. He was honorably discharged in 1952.
Marvin spent his life as a farmer. During years of failed crops, he found work on the railroad, in the sawmills, at the grain elevators and a pig farm.
Marvin's adventurous spirit led him on travels to Niagara Falls Canada, Oregon, Tennessee, Florida, and the entire coast of California.
His passion for wood crafting resulted in cabinets, picture framing, commemorative crosses and the complete refurbishment of a 1910 home in Chester with his dear sister, Opal.
Marvin was preceded in death by his parents and his two beloved sisters and brothers-in-law, Opal Faye (Max Laverne Childers) and Lorna Louise (Charles Edward Garrett). Also preceded in death by his aunts, uncles, several cousins and numerous dear friends.
He is survived by many relatives and friends, all of whom will remember him with love and compassion.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 AM, Saturday, July 8, 2023 at the St. John Lutheran Church, Chester, NE with Reverend Greg Schaffer, officiating.
Interment will follow at the Chester Cemetery, rural Chester, NE.
Visitation and viewing will be held from 9:30 AM until service time on Saturday, July 8, 2023 at the Church.
