Marvin Root Obituary

1938 – 2025

Marvin F. Root, 87, of Rome, passed away on Wednesday August 20, 2025, at Eastern Star Home in Oriskany, N.Y. He was born in Mount Morris, N.Y. on January 09, 1938, son of the late Ellison and Agnes Schram Root. Marvin retired from Rome Developmental Center. He also worked as a mason and a master carpenter and was involved in building several homes and garages in the Rome and Clinton area. He married Mary Parisi Calandra, who passed away in 2000. Marvin later married Thelma Dekin, who passed away in 2019.

Marvin was a member of the Stanwix Men's Club and the Toccolana Club. Everywhere he went, Marvin made friends, including his bocce teammates, especially his partner Joyce Lyman.

Surviving are a daughter, Michelle Root Welch; a stepdaughter, Karen Calandra, stepdaughter, Brenda (Tom) Hoban; step grandchildren, Dennis Calandra, Jr., Jasper Calandra, III, Jamie Cullop, Jennifer Calandra, Stefanie Calandra, Joseph Calandra, Natale Calandra, Julian Jaynes, Lyndsey (Brian) DeVoogel, Ryan (Tiarra) Jaynes; and a step great-grandson, John Jaynes. Also surviving are nieces, Rebecca (Armando) Banuelos, and Ann (Kevin) House; nephews, William Daws (Barb Mosher), and Don and Terra Worden;, as well as many great-nieces and nephews. Marvin also leaves behind a special friend, Sheila Bonvicino, whom he shared the last few years of his life with, and close friend Kenny Brown, who loved Marv dearly and always called him "Dad." He was predeceased by his parents, Ellison and Agnes; a daughter, Cindy Baldwin; stepsons, Jasper (Pam) Calandra and Dennis Calandra; stepdaughters, Linda and Toni Calandra; a sister, Dawn Worden; grandson, William Cullop; and his friend and Best Man, Sam DiBella.

The family wishes to extend a special heartfelt thank you to the staff at Eastern Star Home for their care and compassion shown to Marvin during this difficult time. They would also like to extend gratitude to Mary from Berkshire Bank in Rome as she helped Marvin keep his checkbook balanced.

Funeral Services will be held on Monday August 25, 2025, at 6 p.m. at the Nicholas J. Bush Funeral Home, Inc., 7751 Merrick Rd., Rome, N.Y. Relatives and friends may call at the funeral home on Monday August 25, 2025, from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m., prior to the service. Burial will be in Kirkland Cemetery, Clark Mills on Tuesday August 26, 2025, at 10:30 a.m.
