Mary D. Ackerson, a cherished matriarch, and pillar of her community, passed away peacefully at her home surrounded by her loving family on February 25, 2026. Born on May 27, 1937, in
Jersey City, New Jersey, Mary's journey through life was marked by her unwavering dedication to her family, her career, and her volunteer work. She was a woman of deep Christian faith whose generous spirit touched the lives of many.
Mary's early years were spent in Newark, and she later grew up in Kearny. Her vibrant life journey took her to Keansburg, where she spent many years, and later to Virginia. Finally, 23 years ago, she settled in Atlantic Highlands, where she would spend her remaining years creating a warm and welcoming home for all who entered.
Predeceased by her parents, Harold and Teresa Douglas, her grandson Anthony Ackerson, three sisters, Elaine Massari, Barbara Meehan, Cecelia Cagnina, and her son-in-law George Panagakos, Mary's legacy is carried on by her loving children: Christopher Ackerson of Holmdel, Mark (Kathleen) Ackerson of Leonardo, Cheryl Panagakos of Atlantic Highlands, Karen Ackerson (William Scobie) of Keansburg, and Mary (Jack) Reseter of Keansburg. She is also survived by her sister, Helen (Angelo) Caruso of North Arlington; a brother-in-law, James Meehan of Ocean Township; her cherished 16 grandchildren, 29 great-grandchildren, and 3 great-great-grandchildren; and her adopted daughter, Ginger Rogan, who held a special place in her heart.
Mary's professional life was distinguished by her service to the Department of the Army, where she retired after many years as a logistician field and project manager for Night Vision/Reconnaissance, Surveillance, and Targeting Acquisition. Her dedication to her work was only matched by her commitment to serving others.
A devout Christian, Mary lived her faith through action. She was an ever-present volunteer in her community, whether it was at the OLPH Food Pantry, St. Agnes Thrift Store, Meals on Wheels, or St. Vincent De Paul. Mary believed in the power of helping others, and she did so with a joyful heart, never seeking recognition for her selfless acts of kindness.
Her interests extended beyond her volunteer work. Mary was a beacon of love and support, always ready to lend a hand or a listening ear to anyone in need. Her home was a refuge to friends and family alike, a place where laughter was shared, and memories were made.
As we remember Mary, we celebrate a life lived with purpose and passion. Her legacy of love, compassion, and community service will continue to inspire all who knew her. Mary D. Ackerson's spirit will forever be a guiding light to her family and the countless lives she touched. She will be deeply missed, but her warmth, kindness, and the lessons she imparted will live on.
