Mary Frances Butler Johnston Alfred

A Celebration of Life honoring Mary Frances Butler Johnston Alfred will be held from 2:00 p.m. until 5:00 p.m., Saturday, November 5, 2022, in the Chapel at Spring Lake Skilled Nursing and Rehabilitation, 8622 Line Avenue, Shreveport, Louisiana.

Mary Frances Alfred was born July 29, 1939 in Shreveport, Louisiana to Neil and Maria Butler and passed away Thursday, October 20, 2022 at the age of 83.

Mary grew up in Bossier City, Louisiana and graduated from Bossier High School. After meeting her first husband and father of her children, Kenneth Earl Johnston, she began her profession as a hair stylist at her salon, The Model. She later opened a second salon known as The Tailored Lady, and eventually added proprietor of Young at Heart dress shop to her many business accomplishments. Mary loved being stylish and fashionable! She was also a gifted artist who helped illustrate a friend’s Christian book and was even commissioned to paint a mural on a B-52 for Barksdale Air Force Base. However, she was most proud of the Marilyn Monroe portrait on the bottom of her pool. Mary loved to travel the world with her second husband, Richard Alfred, but most of all she loved her children and grandchildren. She will always be remembered as being as cheerful as a daisy, her favorite flower.

Mary is preceded in death by her parents; her second husband, Richard Alfred; her beloved son, Johnny Ray; and her Aunt Girty Lee Pierce Brazil, who helped raise her.

Left to cherish her memory are her daughter, Glynis Rae Johnston; stepchildren, Brenda Alfred Viselli and Lynnie Alfred Terry; grandchildren, Kendra Godfrey Brown and husband, Zeke, and Sean Godfrey; great-grandchildren, Penelope Laila Brown, Josiah Angel Brown, and Lainey Nicoletta Godfrey; sister, Patricia Butler; brother, Ronnie Butler, and first husband, Kenneth Earl Johnston.

The family would like to thank the staff at Spring Lake Skilled Nursing and Rehabilitation, friends, Lisa Sigrest, Diane Woodward, Shoni Mangham, the staff and families of St. Mark’s Cathedral School, especially the 5th grade class, and Rose-Neath Funeral Home for their care and compassion during this difficult time.

The family suggests that any flower memorials be yellow daises, which symbolize Mary’s life.
