Mary Baxter Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Allen Funeral Home and Crematory on Jan. 4, 2026.
Mary Jane Hudson Baxter, known to many as Jane, 97, of Bloomfield, Indiana, passed away peacefully at home on December 10, 2025, surrounded by her loving family. She was born in Bloomington, Indiana, on February 1, 1928, to Lois (née Hanna) and Douglas Hudson. Jane graduated from Bloomington High School in 1945, raised four loving daughters, and worked for Indiana Bell. A natural leader, she became active in Communications Workers of America (CWA) Local 4818, serving the local in several positions, including president for 37 years. She enjoyed collecting and refinishing antique furniture and baking delicious pies for her family.

Jane is survived by her four daughters, Mary Jane Baxter, Carol Lynn Baxter, Susan Fleming (late Gerald "Jerry" Fleming), and Betsy (Karl) Stevens; her two grandsons, Nicholas and Montgomery Stevens; one sister, Carol De Saint Victor (late Pierre De Saint Victor); three nieces; and one nephew.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her brother, Richard "Dick" Hudson (late Betty Hudson).

Jane was a truly remarkable woman with a heart big enough to hold so many, and whose love shaped generations. She was witty, funny, and often downright hilarious, with a sharp sense of humor and perfect timing that could light up any room. She did not worry about what others thought and lived life entirely on her own terms, always encouraging others to do the same.

Her legacy lives on in the family she loved so deeply, in the lives she protected and advocated for, and in the many stories that will be told for generations. She taught those around her to be brave, to speak up, to laugh often, and to stand firm in what they believe. She will be deeply missed and forever remembered by all who were lucky enough to know her.

A celebration of Jane's life will be held on March 21, 2026, from 1:00 to 5:00 p.m. at the Indiana Memorial Union, Frangipani Room, 900 E. 7th Street, Bloomington, Indiana. Memorial remarks will begin shortly after 1:00 p.m., followed by an open house from 2:00 to 5:00 p.m.
