Mary Dennis, born on May 2, 1930, in Ellaville, Georgia, passed away on October 13, 2025, in Rochester, New York. Throughout her remarkable life, Mary dedicated 25 years of service at the State Hospital, where she formed many cherished friendships that enriched her journey. Her commitment to her work and her deep connections with her colleagues are a testament to her compassionate spirit.
Mary's educational pursuits included a year at Savannah State University, an experience that shaped her in numerous ways. She was not only devoted to her professional life but also thrived in her personal interests, particularly as an avid gardener. Her gardening skills earned her recognition and admiration from many, marking her as a nurturing figure who cultivated beauty not only in her surroundings but in the hearts of those who knew her.
Mary's family legacy includes her son, Terry Fitzgerald; her grandchildren, Derek Fitzgerald MD, Teri Fitzgerald, currently a student at Texas Southern University, and Noah Fitzgerald, a student at Howard University; as well as her siblings, Luther Terry and Betty Johnson. Mary was also blessed with four generations of nieces and nephews, who will carry on her memory.
She was preceded in death by her loving husband Carl Dennis in 2003; her parents, Will and Gussie Terry, and her siblings, Emma Terry Sanders, Willie Mae Govan, Gladys Terry, Rufus Terry, and James Terry Sr.
In her later years, Mary often reflected on the love and care shown to her by her favorite nephew, Mr. Percy Sanders, for whom she expressed deep gratitude and affection. God Bless you Percy. In addition, her family wishes to extend their appreciation to all the friends and family members who provided support and companionship throughout her life.
Visitation will be held on October 18, 2025, from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM, followed by a Celebration of Life at 4:00 PM , at Thomas Funeral Chapels, located at 4545 Lake Ave, Rochester, NY 14612. Mary Dennis will be remembered fondly for her indomitable spirit, her caring nature, and her enduring contributions to her family and community. May she rest in peace.
