Mrs. Mary Powell Edmonds, affectionately known as “Vern/Burn”, age 67, of Drakes Branch, Virginia entered eternal rest on Sunday, March 29, 2026.
Born in Scottsburg, Virginia on August 4, 1958, she was the daughter of the late James Harrison, Sr, and Dorothy Wylie Powell. Mary attended Halifax County Schools and joined St. Matthews Baptist Church in Clover, VA. Mary was most proud of her work and dedicated service with Tultex Industries in South Boston, Virginia.
In addition to her parents, Mary was preceded in death by her sister, Virginia Powell, two brothers, Richard N. Powell and James H. Powell, Jr. and her son, Michael D. Edmonds
She leaves to cherish her memories, her husband of fifty years, Frederick D. Edmonds, two daughters; Master Sergeant Lisa Wells, US Air Force, (Retired) and LaDonna E. Bacon (Darrell) both of Charlotte, NC and a close grandson she referred to as her son, Kamari A. Walker of the home, six grandchildren; Keishana Thomas (Traviss) of Houston, TX, Shanquail Edmonds of Winston-Salem, NC, Shakeem Edmonds (Salma) of Lynchburg, VA, and Markala Tucker and DeLana Bacon, of Charlotte, NC, five great grand-children Valeria M. Edmonds, Alexander S. Allen, Grace-Marie Thomas, Alani Rae Walker and Quentin S. Allen, one sister; Lola Powell of South Boston, VA, three brothers; Dennis Powell of Scottsburg, VA, Bobby Powell, Sr and Messiah Powell both of South Boston, VA, one brother in law; Jerome Edmonds (Lenora) of Richmond, VA, three forever sister in laws Gloria Powell of Stafford, VA, Josephine Williams of South Boston, VA and Sarah Powell of New York, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and close family and friends.
Funeral services will be conducted 11:00 A.M. Friday, April 3, 2026, at the chapel of Giles-Harris Funeral Home and Cremation Service with Rev. John Craighead delivering the eulogy. Burial will follow in the Powell Family Cemetery, Scottsburg, VA. Public viewing for family and friends will be on Thursday, from 2:00 until 6:00 P.M.
