Mary A. Palumbo Freda, 85, of West Haven, passed away peacefully at her home with her family by her side on Monday, August 12, 2013 after a three month illness. She was the wife of the late Michael A. Freda. Mary was born in Derby on May 7, 1928, was the daughter of the late James and Madelyn Montefusco Palumbo. She grew up in New Haven and moved to West Haven where she was a resident for the past 60 years. Mary was a crossing guard for the West Haven School System and had just completed her 35th year working as a crossing guard for the Seth G. Haley Elementary School. Mother of North Haven First Selectman Michael J. Freda (Shirley) of North Haven and James M. Freda (Domenica) of Milford. Grandmother of Shari, Michael, Michelle, Jamie and Tiffany Freda. Sister of Ann Turcio of East Haven, Rose Panza and Joseph Palumbo both of West Haven and the late Jean LoRusso, Julie Bobo, Annette Marchetti and Sam Palumbo. Also survived by twenty nieces and nephews. The family would like to thank all of the nurses and aides from Home Instead, Well Care and Hospice for providing a level of compassion and comfort during these past few months.
Family and friends are invited to go directly to St. Barnabas Church, 44 Washington Avenue, North Haven on Friday morning August 16th at 10:00 to attend a mass of Christian burial and are also invited to attend the committal services immediately following in St. Lawrence Cemetery. There will be no visiting hours. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the CT Hospice, Inc., 100 Double Beach Rd., Branford, CT 06405.
