Mary Susan Gibbs, 79, a loving daughter, wife and mother passed away on March 19, 2024 after a brief illness. She was a native of Texas. She expressed her faith as a member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church. She is predeceased by her daughter, Stephanie Ann Freel; husband, Joseph Allen Gibbs; sister, Lucia Ann Williams; as well as her parents, Volney Clyde and Pauline Castles of Ft. Worth, Texas.
Susan received her bachelor's degree from Virginia Wesleyan College in Virginia Beach, VA. She began her Library Media Specialist career and taught in the City of Chesapeake and later retired from the City of Norfolk. She continued her love for reading and teaching as a volunteer for the Suffolk Literacy council. She was instrumental in the production of the 1993 yearbook for the Chesapeake Fire Department. She will live on in the hearts and memories of son, Stephen Gibbs and wife Patricia; daughter-in-law, Shannon Gibbs; niece, Lynn Williams; granddaughters, Pauline "Polly" Freel and Emily Dhanvada, grandsons, Zachary and Joshua Gibbs; and many colleagues and friends.
A memorial service will be held at 11 AM on Tuesday, April 2, 2024, at St. Paul's Episcopal Church, 213 N. Main Street, Suffolk, by Rev. Keith Emerson officiating. Burial will be at Albert G. Horton, Jr. Memorial Veterans Cemetery. A visitation will be held on Monday, April 1, 2024, from 6 to 7:30PM at R.W. Baker & Co. Funeral Home and Crematory, Downtown Suffolk Chapel.
