Mrs. Mary Elizabeth Green, age 95, of Castalia, North Carolina transitioned on July 8, 2025 at the Kitty Atkins Hospice Facility, Goldsboro, North Carolina.
Mary Elizabeth Hilliard Green was born on May 15, 1930, to Abraham and Vessie Winstead Hilliard in Nashville, NC. She attended Evans Elementary School and formerly Nash County Training High School. Mary nick named Big Baby as a child and affectionately known as Liz with the family as she grew older. Liz at an early age, joined the Oak Level Missionary Baptist Church, Elm City, NC.
After working on the farms for so many years, Liz decided to relocate to Bronx, NY. After a short time, she moved to Brooklyn, New York. Liz joined Berean Baptist Church in Brooklyn under the leadership of Rev. Hilton James. Liz loved the medical field. She was employed at Kings County Hospital, Creedmoor Hospital, and the Staten Island Developmental Center, where she retired as a supervisor. While in New York, Liz became a member of the Eastern Stars and was awarded the title of Worthy Grand Matron.
After retiring, she moved back to Castalia, NC. Liz loved the Lord, and she immediately joined the Castalia Missionary Baptist Church. Liz joined the choir and was faithful until her illness. Liz also joined the Tar River Association and was a great cook. She was famous for making her pineapple coconut cake, macaroni salad, and sweet potato pie.
Liz was preceded in death by her parents, Abraham and Vessie Winstead Hilliard, her husband, Samuel Green, and her children, son Archie Burt, daughters Linda Grant and Brenda Burt. One brother, Archie Hilliard, five sisters: Lillie Sessoms, Louise Callender, Amy Biggers, Clara Pierce, Maxine Clark, and one son-in-law, Vance Holley.
Liz is survived by her children: Virginia Holley, Maryland, Stacey (Anthony), Brooklyn, New York, and Ernestine Hall of the home, and one Son, Reginald Burt, Kentucky. Special mention of grandchildren whom she helped raise, Annette, Steven, Anthony, and Brittany. 14 Grandchildren and a host of great-grandchildren and greatgreat-grandchildren. Mabel West, Virginia, and Margie Stokes (Henry) of Teachy, NC, and one brother, Emmanuel Hilliard, Wilson, NC, and one sister-in-law, Zora Hilliard, along with a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
A Memorial Service celebrating the life of Mrs. Green will be held on Saturday, July 19, 2025 at Castalia Missionary Baptist Church, 10404 Lancaster Store Road, Castalia, North Carolina beginning at 12:00 noon.
