Obituary: Mary Lou Beard Guthrie
Mary Lou Beard Guthrie passed away on April 21, 2024 in Cleveland,TN. She was born on March 9, 1932, in Polk County, Tennessee, to the late George Harle Beard and Anna Lou Higgins Beard.
Mary's journey was one of service, dedication, and love. She distinguished herself as a trailblazer being one of the first nurse practitioners in Tennessee, participating in a groundbreaking program at Vanderbilt University. Her commitment to healthcare earned her the endearing nickname "Miss Mary" from her patients, while her close family and friends affectionately knew her as "Myrt." To her son, Ken, she was simply "Mom," and to her cherished granddaughter, Emily, she was lovingly known as "Granny."
In 1957, Mary married Roy T. Guthrie, embarking on over 50 years of happiness and companionship. Together, they found joy in rose gardening and traveling. Mary held a lifelong passion for reading and in her later years a love for following the stock market and current events.
Mary's legacy is cherished by her surviving family, including her son Kenneth Roy Guthrie and daughter-in-law Becky Ramsey Guthrie of Cleveland, TN, and granddaughter Emily Anne Guthrie and her husband, Michael Aurand of Nashville, TN. She is also survived by her younger sister, Catherine Beard Norwood, and several nieces and nephews.
A testament to her resilience and spirit, Mary enlisted in the Army National Guard in the 1990’s serving as a medic during the Gulf War. Her bravery and dedication to serving her country exemplified her unwavering commitment to others.
Mary and Roy were faithful members of Wesley Methodist Church, where their presence and contributions enriched the lives of many. The family extends their gratitude to the compassionate staff of Garden Plaza Cleveland, where Mary spent her final years among dear friends. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the Guthrie Garden Fund at Wesley Methodist Church, honoring Mary's legacy of nurturing growth and fostering community.
Mary Lou Beard Guthrie will be deeply missed and fondly remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing her. Her legacy of kindness, compassion, resilience, and pioneering spirit will continue to inspire others. Welcoming her home are her parents, Harle and Anna Lou, husband, Roy T. Guthrie along with their infant son, Andy, sister, Edith Beard Baldree, and brother George Beard.
Celebration of life will be held at Poole Funeral Home on Thursday, April 25, 2024. Visitation is 12pm to 2pm and the service begins at 2pm at the funeral home with Chris Rouse officiating. Burial at Hilcrest Memorial Gardens will follow immediately after the service.
