Mary Elizabeth Heinen (née Horton), 81, of Boerne, Texas, passed away peacefully surrounded by her loving family on August 2, 2025. She was preceded in death by her husband of over 60 years, Rafe Curtis Heinen (2022); parents, Walter and Martha Horton; brother, Walter Horton Jr.; granddaughter, Megan McBee; and grandson, Joshua McBee.
Born May 27, 1944, in Birmingham, Alabama, Mary wed her high school sweetheart, Curtis, in 1961. The two moved to Boerne in 1981, where they raised their children and formed lifelong friendships rooted in love, laughter, and shared values.
Mary is survived by her children, Debra Worton (Lance), Elizabeth McBee, Kimberly Howard (John), and Karl Heinen (Denise); brother, Jack Horton (Linda); sister, Linda Vivian-Singleton (Robert); 15 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.
In the 1980s, she worked briefly as a fraud specialist for Southwestern Bell before deciding to stay home to focus on family. She later held part-time roles that kept her socially engaged-she loved chatting with others and sharing stories.
Mary enjoyed gardening, watching birds, and spending time with friends. She and Curtis shared a love of dancing, chili cook-offs, and travel. A woman of faith, she was a member of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church.
She taught commitment-to marriage, family, friendship-and her legacy lives on through the traditions she passed down, the lessons she instilled, and the love she gave through her presence.
The family extends heartfelt thanks to caregivers Yolanda, Nola, Shelly, and Michaela, and hospice nurse Natalie, for their compassionate care.
A viewing will be held from 4:30 to 5 p.m. on Thursday, August 7, at Ebensberger Fisher Funeral Home, followed by visitation from 5 to 7 p.m., with a rosary at 5:30 p.m. A Funeral Mass will take place at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church on Friday, August 8, at 11 a.m., followed by a graveside service. A reception will follow at El Chaparral in Boerne. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Wildlife Rescue & Rehabilitation in Kendalia.
