HERNER, Mary N. "Rita" – of Otisville, age 90, passed away Tuesday, October 21, 2025, at Vista Springs Trillium Village Grande Estate in Clarkston, MI. A Funeral Service will be held 1 PM, Monday, October 27, 2025, at Allen Funeral Home, 9136 Davison Road, Davison, MI 48423; Pastor Alan Duce officiating. Interment will be in Smith Hill Cemetery in Otisville, MI. The family will welcome visitors from 11 AM until the time of service on Monday. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Heart-to-Heart Hospice, in Rita's memory.
Rita was born in Mt. Morris, MI on April 14, 1935, daughter of the late Harvey and Dolores (Brown) Mathews. She married William "Bill" Herner on November 23, 1957, and he preceded her in death on April 11, 2015. In her youth, Rita was very athletic. She retired from the Davison Post Office with more than 30 years of service. Rita was a member of Richfield Church of the Nazarene. In her spare time, Rita enjoyed reading, fishing, watching Detroit sports teams, and shopping. Above all else, her greatest joy was found in spending time with her family, especially attending her grandchildren and great-grandchildren's sporting and school events. Together they have many fond memories of traveling, snowmobiling and spending time at Chippewa Lake.
Rita is survived by her loving daughters, Kathy (Terry) McClain, Kim Spiris and Kay (Steve) Ross; grandchildren, Brent (Alicia) McClain, Craig (Becky) McClain, Alicia (Aric) Petker, Jonathan (Megan) Spiris, Jacqueline Ross, and Stephanie (Gavin Farmer) Ross; great-grandchildren, Nicholas, Abby, Bailey, Brooklyn, Lila, Frankie, Margo, Ashley, and Jessica; siblings, Jan Adams, Juanita Mathews, Lorena (Steve) Hiller, Cindy (Tom) Adkins, Dan (Carol) Mathews; and many other loving family members and friends. In addition to her parents and her husband, Rita was preceded in death by son-in-law, Steve Spiris; siblings, Harvey Mathews, Jr, Melvin "Dick" Mathews, Darrell Mathews, Tom Mathews, and Karen Campbell.
