Mary Hickerson Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by E M Coots' Sons Inc Funeral Home on Mar. 29, 2026.
Mary B. Hickerson, the cherished matriarch of the Hickerson family, passed away peacefully at home on Friday, March 27, 2026, at the age of 97. Born on April 3, 1928, in Pennington Gap, VA, to Harvey and Mae Herrell, Mary's life was a testament to faith, resilience, and the quiet power of a mother's love.

Throughout nearly a century of life, Mary remained the bedrock of her family. She was a woman of deep devotion, both to the Lord and to the many lives she helped raise and nurture. Her kitchen was a place of legendary comfort; she was famed for her fried chicken, her signature jam cakes, and the chocolate chip cookies that will be missed by generations. A longtime member of First Trinity Baptist Church, her unwavering faith guided her through every chapter.

Mary is survived by her daughter, Barbara Cromity (Samuel II); her sons, Jim Hickerson (Geraldine) and Steve Hickerson (Cecilia); 11 grandchildren, and numerous great-grandchildren. She also leaves behind her sisters, Opal Tinsley, Cynthia Grady, and Martha Farrow, and nieces Lynn Sanders, Dorothy Hickerson, along with a host of nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, James Hickerson Jr.; her grandson, Samuel Cromity III; sisters Clora Herrell and Wanda Herrell; brothers Gene Herrell, Emmett Herrell, and Saint Herrell.

In a beautiful tribute to her 98-year journey, Mary's homegoing service will be held on her birthday, Friday, April 3, 2026, at 12:00 p.m. at First Trinity Baptist Church (1506 Spring St, Jeffersonville, IN). Visitation will begin at 11:00 a.m. Burial will follow at Walnut Ridge Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to First Trinity Baptist Church.
