Mary Elizabeth Hughes passed away on November 14, 2025. She was born in Chicago, IL on August 28, 1947, the first child of the late John B. and Eleanor A. (Thayer) Hughes. She was predeceased by her brother John B. Hughes Jr. of Oakham in 2024.
Educated in Worcester, she was a graduate of Sacred Heart Academy and earned her Bachelor's and Master's degrees from Worcester State College. She was a dedicated elementary school teacher in the primary grades of Worcester Public Schools for 35 years. After retiring from full time teaching, Mary was a tutor for many years within the same school system.
Mary belonged to Christ the King parish and was formerly a member of St. Peter's Parish where she taught CCD for two decades.
Mary had many interests throughout her life including, but not limited to, the arts, travel, nature, the ocean and family. Second only to family, one of her greatest joys, were her beloved pets.
Mary was her mother's primary caregiver during Eleanor's final years, providing a home, a comfortable life, companionship and love. Mary is survived by her brother Frank E. Hughes & his wife Sharon of West Yarmouth, her three nieces, Kelly Duncan of West Yarmouth, Erin George & her husband Chris of Holden, Madison Dupuis & her husband Kevin of Worcester, and her nephew Christian Hughes & his wife Colleen, along with many grandnephews, grandnieces, cousins and friends.
Although Mary is no longer with us, we know that she is now with the Lord, her parents, her brother John, and other family and friends who have passed before her.
Funeral services will be coordinated by Athy Memorial Home with a Catholic Mass on Wednesday November 19, at 10 a.m. in Christ the King Church, 1052 Pleasant St., Worcester followed by her burial at 11:30 at St. John Cemetery, 260 Cambridge Street, Worcester.
A luncheon gathering for family and friends will conclude the services.
