Former Lt Governor Mary Anne Krupsak
Mary Anne Krupsak, a trailblazing figure in the fight for women's rights, and the first woman ever elected Lieutenant Governor of New York State, passed away peacefully on December 28th at her home on Seneca Lake. She was 92.
A lifelong Democrat of Polish ancestry, Krupsak was born on March 26, 1932 in Schenectady, New York to Ambrose and Mamie Krupsak. Raised in Amsterdam, Montgomery County, NY, Krupsak earned her Bachelor's Degree in history from the University of Rochester in 1953, before receiving her Masters Degree in public communication from Boston University in 1955. Prior to graduating from University of Chicago Law School in 1962, Krupsak served as a Public Information Officer at the New York State Department of Commerce, and later as a staff member of New York Governor W. Averell Harriman.
She was a member of both the New York State Assembly from 1969-1973, and the New York State Senate from 1973-1975, and soundly defeated Mario Cuomo in the Democratic primary of 1974, prior to making history as the first woman ever to be nominated and elected Lieutenant Governor of New York in November of that year.
In 1978 Krupsak successfully fought to save Radio City Music Hall from demolition, and instead ensured that the iconic theatre be preserved as a National Landmark as it remains today. In life after politics, Krupsak became Senior Partner at the law firm Krupsak & Mahoney, and a Senior Partner and Co-Founder of Krupsak, Wass de Czege & Associates; an economic development firm.
She also served on the Board of Directors for several corporations, including toy manufacturer Coleco, whom during her tenure introduced the worldwide phenomenon of Cabbage Patch Kids, generating over $2 billion in sales in 1983-1984. Alongside her friend Dr. Konstatine Frank, her committed efforts played a significant role in the development of the Finger Lakes wine industry as we know it today.
She loved life, and she lived it well.
She loved her friends and her family; the Wytrwals, the Krupsaks, and the Cohens. She exemplified a life of purpose, and of dedication to public service and others.
Family and Friends may attend a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 am on Monday, January 6, 2025, at St. Francis De Sales Church, 130 Exchange Street, Geneva. Burial will be at Fort Hill Cemetery, Auburn, NY.

Thank you for leading the way from the State House to the D. in NYC.
Long ago, but remembered.

From the first time I heard Mary Anne speak in Chautauqua County to her last talk with her Albany staff, she was inspirational. She spoke from her heart.

She sincerely cared about people. She listened carefully to each person with whom she met and understood the problem or issue of concern. She moved to action ...and accomplished great things often known only by her staff and the people in need.

As a leader she was both incredibly courageous and strong, yet warm and loving...and not afraid to show all of these characteristics. Mary Anne was an energy for good all the days of her life.

I will always remember her vibrant, welcoming, beautiful smile and generous nature. She seemed to me both powerful and kind, energetic, passionate and patient. So grateful to have been in her company.
