Mary L. Laird, 90, of Sullivan, Missouri, passed away peacefully on Saturday, May 31, 2025 at her home, surrounded by her loving family.
Mary Lee Laird was born on February 26, 1935, in the quaint town of Shirley, Missouri, to the late Harry A. Kramer and Gertie Hollingsworth. Mary's early years were spent in Saint Louis, where she attended school and quickly assumed the role of caregiver, tending to her younger siblings. Her selfless nature and nurturing disposition were evident from a very young age, traits that would define her throughout her life.
At the age of 18, Mary's life took a romantic turn when she met her soulmate, Boice Laird at the Compton Dance Hall. It was a classic tale of love at first sight, and the couple wasted no time in solidifying their union, marrying on February 28, 1953, just three weeks after meeting. Together, they embarked on a journey of love and partnership that would span decades.
Mary and Boice were blessed with four children: Ron, Linda, Diane, and Larry. The family made their home in Baldwin, Missouri, where Mary embraced her role as a stay-at-home mother, raising her children with love and patience. In 1978, the Lairds moved to Sullivan, which they proudly made their final home.
Mary had a passion for fashion, taking delight in her collection of clothes and cherished knick-knacks. Her laughter often filled the room during episodes of the Golden Girls, and the strains of Bluegrass music, a family staple, provided the soundtrack to many of their gatherings. Traveling, playing cards, and creating cherished memories with their grandchildren at Cloud Nine Lake Resort were among her favorite pastimes.
Mary's love for her family was unparalleled, but it was matched by her devotion to her faith. She enjoyed attending services at The Ridge Church alongside her husband, Boice.
As the ultimate homemaker, Mary's talents extended well beyond her culinary skills. She was a beacon of love and stability, and a fantastic cook whose chocolate gravy was a staple for her grandchildren, and a devoted wife whose partnership with Boice was a testament to enduring love.
She is survived by her husband of 72 years, Boice Laird of Sullivan, Missouri; three children: Ron Laird and wife Kelly of Sullivan, Missouri, Linda Cissell and significant other, Dave Durrel of High Ridge, MO; Diane Capestro and husband Joseph of Saint Clair, Missouri; thirteen grandchildren; 22 great – grandchildren; and two great – great grandchildren; a daughter – in – law, Kim Laird of Sullivan, Missouri; many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her son, Larry Laird; a daughter – in – law, Shelia Laird; her father, Harry Kramer and wife Vanita; her mother, Gertie and husband Charlie Kendall and her siblings: Eugene Kramer and wife Thelma, Keith Kramer and wife Sue, Leyman Kramer and wife Maggie, Calvin Kramer and wife Wanda, Beulah Miller and husband Pejo, Gladys Dicus and husband Moe, and Sara Ella Tiner and husband Bob.
A Celebration of Life will be held at 11 AM – 3 PM, at The Ridge Church North Campus located at 131 Highway WW, Sullivan, Missouri 63080.
