My sister Mary and I shared a father. We both called him Daddy, and she became a good friend to my mother, who loved her.
Mary lived for her husband Ben and their children. She was a proud military wife, and it's hard to think of her without him too. They were married over 50 years. He was a military hero, and after he retired, they built their dream house near the Blue Angels air base in Pensacola. They were rock solid, developed second careers, and were the most gracious hosts imaginable to friends and family.
They planned to explore the U.S. in their new RV, but after a first visit to Daddy & my mom in Louisiana, Ben suffered a massive stroke. Mary ultimately became his full time caretaker, and everything in her life was to assure his good care and place in the family, keeping family together. She always put Ben first, and they instilled their love and values into their children. Their family became a model of caring, achievement, fidelity, and contribution to others.
Mary loved Jesus Christ. She was very spiritual. She was active in her church, did missionary work in Mexico, and was a giver to people who needed love, supplies, song and prayer. She once took me to a special service with a guest speaker whose life had been saved by a miraculous intervention. She related to the youth in her church and they loved her enough to unexpectedly come after a hurricane to clean up the debris and mess at her home.
Mary was full of vitality and strong convictions, even toward the end. She sent Christmas cards to my younger sister and me. Always open-armed, welcoming and empathetic, interested in our lives, with lots of stories to share.
Now she is free of pain, and I believe with her beloved Ben, having fulfilled her life and purpose as prepared for her by God.
