"Cante Waste Mato Wi" (Good Hearted Bear Woman)
Mary Cecelia Locke was born on August 4, 1953, in
Pine Ridge, SD to Wilbur Locke and Frances Annie Short Horn (Locke). Mary made her journey to the Spirit World on May 30, 2025, at the Avera McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls, SD.
Mary grew up in Porcupine, SD. Her first language was Lakota. She did not speak English until she was in the 5th grade, where she was forced to learn it. She continued to attend school at Porcupine School, helping fellow classmates to learn English. At home she grew up with siblings and many cousins whom she called sisters and brothers. Mary was always family orientated, strong minded, full of spirit, hard working and had a great sense of humor and determination.
She pursued her GED and obtained a degree in medical office management. She later attended three years at the University of Minnesota. She also worked in the Security Field for 14 years. She lived in Denver, Colorado and on the Reservation, then in 1990 she moved to Minneapolis, MN and lived in the Minnesota area until 2012, when she then came home to live in Porcupine, SD. She had strong faith in the Creator; she believed in Lakota Spirituality and praying. She passed these beliefs on to her children and grandchildren. She was a kindhearted, generous, helpful, and caring person; a true Lakota woman who is deeply loved by her family, friends, and relatives. Mary will be truly missed.
