Obituary published on Legacy.com by Samuel J. Jones Funeral Home on Aug. 27, 2025.
Phillip Lynn Locke, lovingly known by many as Cutty from his Air Force days, Big Dog in his professional career, and Rusty amongst his airline family, passed away on August 24, 2025, at the age of 65. Born on May 24, 1960, in
Pittsburgh, PA, to the late Earl and Doris Locke, Phillip lived a life full of grit, laughter, and love for family, friends, and his city.
He grew up in Pittsburgh and graduated from Brashear High School in 1979. Soon after, he enlisted in the United States Air Force, where he proudly served for nine years, achieving the rank of Staff Sergeant. His military career took him to many places, but he often reminisced most fondly about his time stationed in Guam.
After returning home, Phillip pursued a career in the rent-to-own industry. With hustle and tenacity, he rose through the ranks to become a Regional Manager-one of the few to achieve the role without a college degree-earning recognition and awards along the way. He was a natural mentor, shaping the careers of many who worked with him, and leaving a legacy of leadership that reached far beyond the office.
Phillip's personal life was filled with love and devotion. He met Adrian Williams in 1986, and after years of friendship and staying connected, their bond grew into a lasting love. They were married on April 22, 2000, at Central Baptist Church in the Hill District, beginning 25 wonderful years of marriage. Together they built a blended family that brought joy and connection into their lives. Phillip treasured his role as a father to Nicole Young (Reggie) and Quiano Locke (Amanda), and though raised in separate households, they shared in the love of one close-knit family.
In 2009, Phillip was diagnosed with Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis (IPF), a challenge that changed the course of his life. On November 1, 2011, he received the extraordinary gift of a double lung transplant at Presbyterian University Hospital. Phillip embraced this second chance at life with gratitude, strengthening family bonds and pouring himself into new ventures. He founded Sirod Enterprises LLC, which provided housing for airline employees-a business that not only met a need but also created community. For many, Phillip wasn't just a landlord; he became a mentor, friend, and father figure.
Outside of work, Phillip was fiercely competitive and always up for a challenge-whether it was a game of Bidwhist, darts (as a proud member of a dart league), or chess. He was also a die-hard Pittsburgh sports fan, especially when it came to his beloved Steelers. Sundays were for football, family, and his famous grilling, where he often crowned himself the "Grill Master."
Most importantly, Phillip cherished his role as a family man. He adored spending time with his grandchildren-Desaray, Jonah, Reagan, Quamari, Quincy, Kayonna, and Destiny-and was blessed to also welcome great-grandchildren into his life: Jalynn, Lekai, Jovani, and others who brought him endless joy. He also leaves behind his wife, Adrian; siblings Anita Covington, Pamela Locke, Norman Locke, and Donald Locke; as well as several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Earl and Doris Locke; his brother, Leroy Holloway; and sisters, Iona Locke, Sandra Locke, and Eileen Cummings.
Phillip's story is one of perseverance, joy, and unwavering love for his family and community. He will be remembered not only for his accomplishments but for the way he made others feel seen, supported, and loved. Phill will be missed by many, until we meet again… "See ya later Bye!"
