Mary Louise Haemker, affectionately known as Mary Lou, passed away peacefully on October 2, 2025, at the age of 98. She was born on February 21, 1927, in Arlington Heights, Illinois, where she later met the love of her life, Clifford Haemker. Mary Lou and Clifford were married for 66 wonderful years before his passing in 2013. Together, they began their married life in Arlington Heights and, in 1980, moved west to Stevensville, Montana, where they made their home and built lasting friendships in the Bitterroot Valley.
Mary Lou was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother whose warmth, generosity, and humor filled every room she entered. A fabulous cook, she leaves behind a rich legacy of family recipes that will be cherished for generations. Her German stollen and homemade spaghetti sauce were legendary family favorites and a reflection of her love for bringing people together around the table.
She is survived by her children, Gail Kerscher (George) and Mark Haemker; her grandchildren, Wes Kerscher (Kelley), Zoey Hallam (Steve), Geordy Kerscher (Becky), Heather Haemker, and Heidi Sharp (Jason); and her great-grandchildren, Lucas Kerscher, Hailey Kerscher, Logan Kerscher, Cooper Hallam, Emerson Hallam, Karly Kerscher, Mitchell Kerscher, Emery Sharp, and Andrew Sharp.
The family wishes to extend heartfelt thanks to Christina and the caring staff at Beehive Homes in Missoula, where Mary Lou lived for the past nine years. Their kindness, compassion, and excellent care brought great comfort to her and to all who loved her.
The family would also like to thank Big Sky Hospice for their tender care towards the end of Mary Lou’s life. Their assistance helped us through a time when much care was needed.
A Funeral Mass will be held at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church on Friday, October 10, 2025, at 11:00 a.m. The graveside service will take place at 3:00 p.m. at the Western Montana State Veterans Cemetery, where Mary Lou will be laid to rest beside her beloved husband, Clifford. Mary Lou will be remembered for her gentle spirit, her deep love of family, and the joy she brought to all who knew her.
