Mary Marcellus Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by French Funeral Home, Inc. - Gouverneur on Feb. 10, 2026.
Mary Judith Marcellus (Stowell), born May 24, 1948, of Gouverneur, New York, passed away peacefully on February 8, 2026, at Gouverneur Hospital at the tender age of 77.

She was born to Verna Mary Hunter and Charles Lynn Stowell.

Known lovingly as Nana Mary, she was quirky, unique, and truly one of a kind. Her family will forever remember her as being carefree and full of life, never taking things too seriously. Her impulsive nature and quick wit brought laughter and smiles wherever she went, leaving lasting impressions on everyone she met. She loved the music of Johnny Cash and Elvis Presley, had an incredible green thumb, and found joy in nurturing both her garden and her family. During the holidays, Nana Mary was always the highlight of the gathering-her over-the-top reactions to gifts made every moment feel special. To her, even the smallest gestures were meant to be treasured.

As families grew, moved away, and time carried everyone in different directions, there seemed to be fewer chances to slow life down and gather together. But whenever those moments came, it felt as though no time had passed at all. Nana Mary had a way of making everyone feel at home, even when she wasn't in her own.

Mary was formerly married to Larry Marcellus Sr., and together they were blessed with three loving children, by whom she is survived: her oldest son, Larry Marcellus Jr., married to April Marcellus, with their children Tacora, Brandon, Tanner, Markis, and Lara; her middle child, Crystal, with her children Nathan and Christopher; and her youngest son, Mark Marcellus, married to Kellie Marcellus, with their children McKenzie (husband Matthew), Abrielle, and Cassandra.

Mary was predeceased by her mother, Verna Mary Hunter; her father, Charles Lynn Stowell; and her brother, Carlton R. Stowell.

A service to honor Mary's life will be held in the spring, when the family can gather together. Condolences may be shared online at www.frenchfuneralhomes.com.

Nana Mary lived with laughter, loved without restraint, and found joy in even the simplest moments. Her smile will forever be remembered by those lucky enough to see it, the kindness in her eyes will never fade, and the sound of her laughter will echo in our memories, forever.
