Carroll Marcellus Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Seger Funeral Home, Inc. - Atkinson on Jan. 27, 2026.
Carroll Dale Marcellus, age 93, passed away on January 23, 2026, at Providence Medical Center in Wayne, Nebraska, surrounded by his loved ones. He was born on September 29, 1932, in rural Stuart, Nebraska, just half a mile from the farm where he would spend most of his life. Carroll was the son of Delbert Boyd and Mary Luella (Cosner) Marcellus.

Carroll spent the first eight years of his childhood on a farm north of Atkinson before moving with his parents to the farm northeast of Stuart, where he devoted his life to farming. He honorably served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War, completing training at Fort Leonard Wood in Missouri, Fort Belvoir in Virginia, and Camp Stoneman in San Francisco, California. He trained as an engineer and was recognized for his sharpshooting skills.

Following his military service, Carroll returned home to work the family farm and soon met his future wife, Doris, who was teaching at Pioneer District #91. The two were married on June 30, 1956, and shared 62 devoted years together. They raised two children, Jeffrey Dale and Stephanie Ann. Carroll took great pride in stewarding the family land, growing corn and soybeans, putting up hay, raising stock cattle and hogs, and milking cows for a time. He deeply appreciated the way irrigation transformed farming and enjoyed watching agriculture evolve over the decades.

Carroll had a lifelong interest in family history and loved sharing stories from the past. He enjoyed Westerns and war movies, music, and, above all, time spent with his family. He was a proud member of the Sons of the American Revolution, honoring the legacy of ancestors who fought in the American Revolution. Carroll was an exceptional father, son, brother, uncle, and friend-always ready with a kind word or a helping hand. His gentle spirit and generosity will be greatly missed by all who knew him.

Carroll was preceded in death by his parents; his son, Jeffrey Marcellus; and his siblings Melvin Marcellus, Leo Marcellus, Lloyd Marcellus, Donald Marcellus, and Mildred (Marcellus) Rentschler. He is survived by his daughter, Stephanie Marcellus, and her husband, Shawn Smith, of Wayne, Nebraska, along with many beloved nieces and nephews.
