Mary Davies McCartney died on 08/ 31/2025 Mary was born Mary Pegram Davies in Mary Washington Hospital in Fredericksburg, Virginia on 07/18/1933 to James Fredrick Carlton and Maria Louise Gordon Davies of King George, Virginia. Mary was the second of five children of Carlton and Louise. Fred, Mary, Elizabeth, George and Lindsay. She was baptized and confirmed in St. John's Episcopal Church in King George and her Mother saw to it that she and her brothers and sisters were never absent from church services and activities for the young. Mary was known to family and friends as Peggy from her middle name Pegram, a family name. She attended elementary and high school in King George where her mother was a math teacher. Mary participated in normal school activities, sports, band, clubs etc.
After High School Mary attended Mary Washington University in Fredericksburg, Virginia then Mary Washington College of the University of Virginia. Upon graduation she accepted a teaching job in Fairfax County VA. Her first car was a red and white 1956 Chevy convertible.
In 1958 Mary decided to be more adventurous and applied to teach overseas for the Department of Defense. She was accepted and assigned to teach in the United Kingdom. Upon arrival in the UK she was assigned to RAF Station Upper Heyford, near Oxford. Upon arrival at the train station in Lower Heyford she and two other colleagues were met by a young Lt. who welcomed them to Upper Heyford and provided transportation to the base where they were to be housed. He invited Mary to a party he and two other bachelor officers were having that evening for friends from the base at the Manor House in Kirtlington. She accepted and 7 months later they were married Esquire and Spinster. In the following summer Jim completed his tour and he and Mary moved to Port Arthur, Texas where he was employed by Gulf Oil Corporation and Mary had a teaching job. Mary completed her first year of teaching and they bought their first house in Nederland Texas. James David was born while living in Nederland. In 1962 Gulf moved the family to Pittsburgh PA. Edward Lane McCartney was born in Pittsburgh on Father's Day in 1964. In 1965 the family moved with Gulf to Houston, TX where Mary taught school. They later moved to Baytown, TX where she taught school. Then to Vicksburg, Mississippi where she taught. Then to Baton Rouge, LA where she taught. Next move was to London, England where she did not teach. Last move was from London to Houston. Again Mary taught school in the Humble Independent School District until retirement.
Mary had a happy active life. She was busy being wife, mother, grandmother, homemaker, teacher, coping with frequent relocating. She loved her family, extended family and friend to all she met. She was a long time member of Kingwood Methodist Church and participated in church activities where ever she lived. She was a member of The DAR and the Nine Hole Lady's Group at the Kingwood Country Club, one year champion.
Mary was predeceased in death by her Mother and Father, Brother in law Paul Morie and Sister in law Barbra Davies of Virginia. She was survived by her husband of 66 years Jimmie McCartney, Kingwood, TX. Son James David and Sylvia, Mont Belview TX. Son Edward Lane and partner David Gooding, of Houston Texas. Granddaughters Victoria Marwaha and Vidur of Norfork VA, Margaux McCune and Nick of Fort Worth TX, Alexandra Watson and Tristan of Fort Worth, TX.
Brother Fred Davies of Fredericksburg, VA. Sister Dr. Elisabeth Morie of Richmond VA., Brother George Davies and Shirley of Boston MA, Sister Lindsay Hamway and Ronald of Richmond, VA. And 9 Nieces and Nephews USA.
In lieu of flowers the family requests a donation to be made to Kingwood Methodist Church or your favorite charity.
