Harlan Eugene McCartney Jr., 73, of Moon Township, passed away, Wednesday, April 2, 2025, in his home. He was born June 21, 1951, in Westland, a son of the late Harlan E and Margaret Allshouse McCartney. Mr. McCartney was 1970 graduate of Fort Cherry High School. Following his graduation, he enlisted with the US Air Force where he served for the next 22 years. Twelve of those years were spent in foreign service and he retired in December of 1992 as a Master Sergeant and aerospace propulsion superintendent. After returning from the service, he worked as a mechanic for US Air for 10 years and then Shaw Munitions in Bridgeville. Gene was a member of the West Hills American Legion Post 924 in Moon Township where he served as Chaplain and the VFW Post 402 in Coraopolis. Mr. McCartney was a NASCAR fan and followed the Pittsburgh Pirates and Steelers. He enjoyed the time he spent with family and his cat Betsy. Surviving are a son, Harlan E. McCartney III of Oklahoma City, OK; a sister, Judy Garcia of Washington; two brothers, Robert McCartney (Chris) of Hopewell and Jeff McCartney (Linda) of Canonsburg; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his wife Patricia and a brother, Terry McCartney. Friends will be received from 1 to 3 and 6 to 8 Wednesday, in the McIlvaine-Speakman Funeral Home Ltd., Robert K. McIlvaine, Owner/Supervisor, 27 Cherry Ave., Houston, PA 15342, where services will be held at 11:30 a.m., Thursday, April 10, 2025. Interment will follow in the National Cemetery of the Alleghenies. Full military rites will be accorded by the Air Force Guard.
