Obituary published on Legacy.com by Lebold-Smith Funeral Home Bolivar, oh on Oct. 1, 2025.
Fredericka (Freddie) Hastings, of Zoar, was born in Canton, Ohio on August 29, 1950 and passed away on Monday, November 18, 2024. She was predeceased by her parents Jack Bowman Hastings and Eleanor Elson Robinson Hastings, as well as her sister Mary Kathryn Hastings. She is survived by her husband and "anam cara" of 51 years, Philip Heagerty of Zoar (her dogs Hector and Sugar) as well as her brothers Edward Hastings of Dover and James Hastings (Ruth Stover) of Canton, and her beloved nieces Tara Hastings and Katharine Hastings (David Furniss) of Bellingham, WA.
Freddie graduated from Sandy Valley High School in Magnolia. She received her Bachelor's Degree from Mary Washington College in Fredericksburg, VA and her Masters degree in social work from the Ohio State University in Columbus, OH. She was retired from DaVita Kidney Care having worked as a nephrology social worker in various settings for over 32 years.
Freddie was a "founding mother" of the Canton Rape Crisis Center. She was a ferocious advocate for women's rights, health care access and the disabled community. She was a volunteer at the Canton Rape Crisis Center and most recently at Meals on Wheels and St. Vincent DePaul. She can be described by her husband as compassionate, knowledgeable, patient, wise and kind in her life's work. She was the last to cry and easy to laugh with.
Freddie was an avid reader of all sorts of books, she was incredibly well read. She was a genius (or in Phil's words "above average") Scrabble player and it brought her great joy to win Scrabble against her family and friends. She loved the theater and art museums. She also walked as many days as possible. She had a special talent for interior design and always paid attention to the smallest details to make her environment beautiful and welcoming. She was a devoted rescuer of dogs and gave many dogs a 2nd or even 3rd chance. She was always putting others' needs above her own and was the most selfless person you could ever meet. And she had a smile and a laugh that could light up any room!
She will be deeply missed and always loved by her family and friends. She's setting the bar very high to get into Heaven.
A memorial Mass will be held at The Holy Trinity Church on Friday, November 22, 2024 at 11:00 AM at with Fr. Tomas Carvajal y Basto as Celebrant, followed by burial at Zoar Cemetery.
