Mary L. Murphy

COLTON -- With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of our beloved Mary Ann (Leary) Murphy, who left this world with the same grace and warmth that defined her life. Mary was born on June 26, 1937, in Potsdam, NY, to John and Pauline (Scanlon) Leary. She grew up in Colton and graduated from Colton-Pierrepont Central School. A lifelong communicant of St. Patrick's Church in Colton, her faith was a guiding force throughout her life.
On May 2, 1959, Mary married the love of her life, Peter J. Murphy, and together they built a home filled with love, laughter, and countless cherished memories. A devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, she was a homemaker in every sense of the word, filling her home with the comforting aroma of home-cooked meals and the sound of laughter. Sunday family lunches were a cherished tradition. When her children were teenagers, their friends always knew they were welcome at Mary's table. A devout Catholic, Mary was known for her unwavering faith, quick wit, and ability to bring joy to others. She never missed an opportunity to stay after church for coffee and conversation, always ready to share a laugh with the priest. Christmas was her favorite time of year, and she took great pride in choosing the perfect, thoughtful gift for each of her eight children, ten grandchildren, and nine great-grandchildren. Mary also found happiness in her garden, working alongside her beloved husband, Peter, tending to their vegetables and flowers. She enjoyed quiet moments with a good book, the excitement of the Game Show Network, and the companionship of her pets.
Mary is survived by her eight children: Martin Murphy, Michael Murphy, Jeffrey Murphy, Douglas Murphy, and Daniel (Kali) Murphy, all of Colton; Diane (Carter) Burns of South Carolina; Vera (Daniel) Helfter of Hopkinton; and Andrea (John) Bates of West Potsdam. She also leaves behind ten grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, and her beloved sister, Helen O'Leary McDonald of South Carolina. She was predeceased by her husband, Peter J. Murphy, and their infant daughter (Katie). Mary's presence was a gift, and though she will be deeply missed, the warmth of her spirit will live on in the hearts of those who loved her. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, April 5, 2025 at 10 a.m. with Rev. Joseph Giroux presiding. Burial will be held in the St. Patrick's Cemetery.
