Mary Helen Ornelas, a beacon of love and selflessness, passed away on November 15, 2025, at the age of 77. Born on December 10, 1947, in San Antonio, Texas, she remained a lifelong resident of this beautiful city, where she also breathed her last breath due to health complications. Mary's life was a testament to faith and the power of giving, leaving behind a legacy that will continue to inspire all who knew her.
Throughout her life, Mary was known for her unwavering dedication to her family and community. She was the loving wife of the late Filemon Ornelas and the cherished mother of Jose Luis Perez Jr., who also preceded her in death. She was a cherished sister to Mary Virginia Gutierrez, Martha Ornelas, Sylvia Gutierrez, Patricia Amaya, and Alicia Tsandoula. Remaining a constant source of strength for her children Katherine Jean Perez, Mark Anthony Perez, and Rachel Ascension Ornelas. Her warmth and guidance continued to blossom in the lives of her grandchildren, Gabriella Nicole Sanchez, Alyssa Marie Esparza, Diego Manuel Perez, and Reeca Deanna Ramirez, and her legacy was further cemented in the smiles of her great grandchildren, Levi Miguel Ramirez, Lorena Reign Ramirez, and Luka Marcus Ramirez. She is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.
Mary's spirit continued to pour her love into every endeavor. Her career spanned various roles, from working at Kelly to serving up comfort food at Luby's and expertly managing data entry tasks. But perhaps her most fulfilling role was that of a homemaker at the ranch in Moore Texas, where she created a warm and welcoming haven for all.
A devout Catholic, Mary's faith was the cornerstone of her existence. It was this faith that gave her the strength and grace to face life's challenges and to be a source of comfort and support for others. Her commitment to living a life was evident in every smile she shared and every hand she held.
Mary's zest for life was reflected in her diverse interests. She found joy in the simple pleasures of garage sales and the thrill of slot machines. Her hands were rarely still, as she was always immersed in crafts and creating beautiful wreaths that brightened many homes. A gifted baker, she was renowned for her delicious banana pudding, chocolate sheet cake, and Mexican cookies. Her love for the classics was evident in her choice of entertainment, often found watching black and white movies, where the simplicity of an earlier time mirrored the purity of her heart.
In the words of Helen Keller, "The best and most beautiful things in the world cannot be seen or even touched - they must be felt with the heart." Mary lived by this philosophy, touching the hearts of all who were fortunate enough to feel the warmth of her spirit.
Mary Helen Ornelas was an extraordinary woman who embodied love, selflessness, and faith in every action. She has left an unforgettable mark on this world, and her memory will continue to motivate and guide us. As we celebrate her life, we are reminded of the impact one person can have by simply loving and living wholeheartedly. Mary's story is not one of sorrow but a beautiful reminder that we, too, can choose to live a life filled with purpose and kindness. Her legacy is one of hope, and it will continue to shine brightly as an example of a life well-lived.
In her own words, "I am always in your heart." We hold that close as we honor her memory
