Mary left this earth on Monday, March 25, 2024 to return to the open arms of her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.
She is survived by her husband, Rudolph (Rudy) Pazdernik; one brother, Sidney Collins; two daughters, Sandra Furlough & Elizabeth Phillippi; one step-daughter, Mary Beth Carlton; one step-son, Robert Pazdernik; ten grandchildren; seventeen great-grandchildren and a host of friends.
Mary was born in Goldsboro, North Carolina. She later attended Pitt County Community College where she received an Associate's Degree in Accounting. After working several years as a book-keeper for a number of major corporations, Mary switched careers and became a medical records associate for a well-known addiction treatment center.
Having developed an interest in alcoholism, Mary spent many years of her life as an active member of numerous self-help groups, helping family members, friends and employers understand the baffling disease and what could and could not be done about it. She also served as the co-founder of at least three such groups, both here and in Houston.
She was an active member of Resurrection Lutheran Church and was instrumental in promoting the "Sock It to me Sunday" and "Undies Sunday" programs, which generated gifts of socks and underwear for the men's center in downtown Newport News.
Born with a spirit of adventure, Mary loved to travel and even helped her husband manage a German-American friendship house in Bad Windsheim, Germany for over 9 months, even though she couldn't speak a word of German.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Monday, April 1, 2024 at Weymouth Funeral Home with reception to follow.
