Her Legacy Mary Louise Phillips, 97, passed away August 27, 2024. She was born on August 13, 1927, in Detroit, Michigan to Walter Gaffney and Beatrice (Fitzpatrick) Gaffney. Mary Lou was blessed to have 2 loves of her life. She married William Miller, and after William passed away she went on to marry Norm Phillips whom she met at church. Mary Lou practiced her Catholic faith with daily mass, daily rosary, as a church sacristan, sponsored a seminarian who later became ordained, Fr. Gnani Lazar, and every day shared God's love and truth with everyone she encountered; always ending her interaction with "God Bless." After leaving the religious order, she worked as a nurse at an internal medicine doctor's office. Mary Lou enjoyed a quiet and prayerful life, her many dogs over the years, some good local college and professional sports teams and most of all her family. She was incredibly loving, generous and outgoing. She had big blue eyes that were always sparkling and she always had a positive attitude. Mary Lou always looked after others before herself, she had a heart for taking care of others. She was known for her lengthy phone conversations to stay connected with you and she always made you feel welcome and special. Mary Lou was dearly loved by her family and friends and will be greatly missed.
Her Family Mary Lou will be missed by her many nieces, nephews and cousins. She is preceded in death by her first husband, William Miller; second husband, Norm Phillips; parents, Walter and Beatrice Gaffney; and siblings, Lois (Frank) Broderick, Colleen (Robert) Clancy, Sue (Larry) Mullitt, Donna (Paul) DeRidder, and John (Edith) Gaffney.
Her Farewell Mary Lou's family and friends will gather Tuesday, September 3, 2024, at 11:00AM (10AM gathering), at St. Mary Catholic Church, 157 High Street, Williamston, MI. Fr. David Fons will serve as celebrant. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are suggested to St. Mary Catholic Church, Williamston, MI.
