LOWELL – Mary Rivas, 82, of Lowell, passed away peacefully on Sunday, October 12, 2025, at North End Rehabilitation and Healthcare Center in Boston.
Born in Lowell, she was the daughter of the late Dr. Phillip E. and Alice (Crowley) Mullane. Mary was a proud graduate of Lowell High School, Class of 1960, and went on to earn her bachelor's degree from Emmanuel College in Boston. She maintained lifelong friendships with her fellow Emmanuel classmates, staying in close contact throughout the years.
Mary began her career as a history teacher in Las Cruces, New Mexico, and later worked as a social worker at a home for unwed mothers in San Francisco, California. Over the years, she held many other positions, always keeping herself active and engaged in the workforce.
A devoted mother and a woman of great wisdom and compassion, Mary was known for her caring nature and strong sense of purpose. She was also a passionate football fan, especially of the New England Patriots, rarely missing a game.
Mary is survived by her loving son, Robert Rivas of Lowell; her brothers, Dr. Phil Mullane of Wells Beach, Maine, and Robert P. Mullane of Orlando, Florida; as well as several nephews and cousins.
A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Monday, October 20, 2025, at 10 a.m. at St. Margaret of Scotland Parish, 374 Stevens Street, Lowell, MA 01851.
