Mary Scafidi AmsterdamMary Scafidi, formerly of James Street and River Ridge Living Center, passed away at St. Mary's Healthcare on December 9, 2013. She joins her husband of over 50 years, Tom, who died in 1997. Born in DeKalb Junction, NY January 9, 1920, Mary was the daughter of Leona and Loredo Camilli, attended local schools, and was a lifelong resident of Amsterdam. Thomas S. Scafidi and Mary were married on December 26, 1942. Mary was a communicant of the former St. Michael's Parish where she was a member of the Rosary Society. Mary was employed by the former Chalmers Knitting Mill of Amsterdam, and several other local industries, before she and her husband, Thomas, purchased the Mohican Market in Amsterdam and later Banta Brothers in Hagaman. Mary is survived by her loving son, Dominick Scafidi (Angie), and devoted daughter, Leona DuBois (Marv); three grandchildren, Lisa (Luke) Rakoczy, Todd (Meredith) Wenskoski and Jason Wenskoski; and four great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her brother, Jimmy Camilli (JoAnne) of Lowell, MA; and several nieces and nephews. Mary loved to laugh, had a great sense of humor, and enjoyed playing practical jokes on her friends and relatives. All were welcome to her home and there was always room for one more at her table. She loved being around her family and friends. Her homemade pasta, ravioli and superb holiday meals were nothing short of spectacular, where everyone waited for doggie bags to take home. While a resident of River Ridge she was very active and especially enjoyed her time in the activity room with Dave, Nancy, Stephanie and the rest of the staff. She was very active all her life, exercising, walking, knitting, crocheting and playing Bocce Ball in two leagues. Mary was known for her wit and remained feisty to the end as many would attest to. Deepest gratitude goes out to the River Ridge facility and St. Mary's Healthcare, St. Theresa's Hall for the kindness and care given to Mary during her illness. Funeral services will be Friday at 10:30 a.m. from the DeStefano Funeral Home, Rte. 5S, Amsterdam, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11:15 a.m. at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church. Burial will follow at Mount Carmel Cemetery. Calling hours will be 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Community Hospice of Amsterdam.FUNERAL HOME
