Mary Louise Sisul, age 96, passed away Tuesday, April 22, 2025 at Eagle Crest South, La Crosse, WI 54601.
Mary was born on March 5th, 1929, in Centerville, Iowa, the daughter of Easter Canalle and Lucile (Wendland) Canalle.
Mary graduated from Centerville Elementary School in June 1942, and Centerville High School May 24th, 1946.
Mary became a teacher at the age of 17, signing her first Teacher's Contract on March 27th, 1946. She taught at the Sunshine School District No. 1. Starting her first day of teaching on August 26th, 1946. Mary studied to be a teacher while still attending high school. Her State Certified High School "Normal Teaching Certificate," was issued on March 5th, 1947.
On June 25th, 1949, Mary was united in marriage to John Joseph Sisul in Centerville, Iowa at St. Mary's Church.
Mary and John moved to Des Moines, Iowa, where Mary became a Beautician then a stay-at-home mother. She then worked for Northwestern Bell Telephone Company - CenturyLink from 1966 to 1989. She was a member of All Saints Catholic Church and then Saint Francis of Assisi Catholic Church and American Legion Highland Park Post 374.
Mary is survived by her son, Steven Sisul of Onalaska, WI; her sister, Helen Marvin of Centerville, Iowa; two grandchildren, Jessica Sisul of Shoreview, MN and Nicole Sisul of Madison, WI; a niece, Leanne Norton of Chariton, Iowa and nephew, Mike (Dorothy) Sisul of Centerville, Iowa; a great-niece, Christina (Norton) Umbenhower of Chariton, Iowa; great-nephew Jeff Sisul of Oskaloosa, Iowa; and special family friend, Roxanna Mayes.
Mary was preceded in death by her husband, John Joseph Sisul; her parents, Easter and Lucile; one great-niece, Melissa Norton; and daughter-In-law, Janet (Tschudy) Sisul.
Graveside services will be held at 1:00PM, Monday, April 28, 2025 at Oakland Cemetery in Centerville with Fr. Ron Hodges officiating. Memorials have been established to Centerville Faith Church Backpack Program, in honor of her love for teaching children, and may be mailed to Thomas Funeral Home, ATTN: Sisul Family, 501 North 18th Street, Centerville, Iowa, 52544. Mary was a great lady who worked hard her whole life. I got to know her distributing Holy Communion at Eagle Crest. Her faith was deep and
strong so now she rests in Peace with the Lord.
