Mary Virginia Smith

Mary Virginia Hunter Smith, 98, of Ashland, Kentucky passed away peacefully Monday, December 15, 2025, at Kingsbrook Lifecare Center. She was born Thursday, November 3, 1927 in Ashland, Kentucky to the late Dr. Charles Randolf Hunter and Eliza Gray Hunter. Mary was a Kentucky Colonel, a member a D.A.R. and Kentucky Retired Teachers Association, and she was the librarian at Russell High School for 29 years. She enjoyed knitting and crocheting and owned a knitting shop in downtown Ashland. Mary was preceded in death, in addition to her parents, by her brother Dr. S. Gray Hunter and a grandson Thomas Jay Tackett. She is survived by her daughters, Johnda Tackett of Ashland, Kentucky and Jennifer (Larry) Sparks of Ashland, Kentucky; grandchildren, Samuel Bart Tackett, Brett Buskey (Alisha), and Alex (TJ) Mansfield; and great-grandchildren Sydney Tackett and Kaitlyn Tackett. A funeral service will be held 10:00 AM, Friday, December 19, 2025 at the Rose Hill Burial Park Mausoleum. Visitation will be held from 9:00 AM to 10:00 AM at the Mausoleum.
