Mary Theresa Stalmann, 92, of New Rochelle, New York, passed away on November 6, 2025, after a short illness during which she was surrounded by her family.

Mary was born on September 22, 1933, to her parents, Thomas and Nora Hughes, in the Bronx, New York. She graduated from Cathedral High School. Shortly after, she joined the New York Telephone Company as a supervisor. She worked there until her retirement 35 years later, forging lifelong friendships and enjoying many laughs.

In 1957, she married George Stalmann. Together, they created homes on Bogart Avenue in the Bronx, in Sound Beach on Long Island, and in Emerald Isle, North Carolina.

To many, she was best known as "Aunt Mary," the beloved sister, aunt, and family matriarch who was wise, loving, and endlessly supportive.

Mary lived life fully, led by her unconditional love for friends and family, joy for the small pleasures, and pride in her Irish heritage.

She loved a good party, a spirited game of Trivial Pursuit, and the New York Times crossword puzzle. Well into her 90s, she was an encyclopedic fund of knowledge. She loved to carry a tune, and could often be found leading a gaggle of nieces and nephews in a sing-along.

Over her 92 years, she cultivated friendships of every variety. She cherished and nurtured these friendships with profound gratitude for the richness they brought to her life.

Mary was a proud first generation Irish-American, along with her brother, Terence, and her sister, Patsy. She loved Irish dance. She joined her Irish friends for dinner on Sundays long after she could no longer dance with them. She passed her love for her Irish heritage to her family.

Mary aged with grace and dignity, and lived a full life into her 90s. Well-known for many classic one-liners, she loved most to say, "Polish is the life of an old shoe."

Mary was predeceased by her husband, George Stalmann, her parents, Thomas and Nora Hughes, her brother, Terence Hughes, and her sister, Helen 'Patsy' Hart Nelson. She is survived by her adoring nieces and nephews and their families: Michael and Geraldine Hart, Thomas and Catherine Hart, Noreen Hart, Kathleen and Ramiro Hernandez, and James Hart; as well as her many great and great-great nieces and nephews.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at the Church of St. Joseph in Bronxville, New York, on Monday, November 10, 2025 at 10:45am. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, an organization close to Mary's heart.
