Margaret McDonough, 91, a beacon of faith and love, passed away peacefully at home on November 6, 2025, in Carmel, NY. Born on February 16, 1934, in New York, NY, Margaret was a woman whose life was a testament to the enduring power of faith and the strength of family bonds.
Margaret was the daughter of the late Felix and Rose (McIntyre) Dolan. She was the beloved wife of Martin McDonough, who preceded her in death in 2016. Together, they built a life filled with love, a legacy carried on by their children: Martin McDonough (Suzanne), Regina Basilone (Joseph), Brian McDonough (Vicki), Bill McDonough (Nancy), Loretta Scapoli (Joe), Bob McDonough, and Tim McDonough (Sandy). Margaret's joy was multiplied by her treasured grandchildren: Emma, Brett, Bianca, Samantha, Molly, Jasmine, Audrey, Joe, Silvia, Martin, Lydia, and Lindsay and five great grandsons. She was predeceased by her dear sister, Mary J. McDonough, who was affectionately known as "Auntie".
She graduated from Cathedral High School in New York City and worked many years in the cafeteria at Carmel High School, where she touched the lives of countless students and staff with her kindness and warmth. Her commitment to her community was evident through her active involvement in the Rosary Altar Society, the Emerald Society, and the Women's Auxiliary of VFW, where she served with dedication and grace.
Margaret's Christian faith was the cornerstone of her life. It guided her actions and gave her strength through life's challenges. She was a living example of the scripture, "And now these three remain: faith, hope, and love. But the greatest of these is love." (1 Corinthians 13:13). Her faith-filled life was a source of inspiration to all who knew her.
Above all, Margaret's family was the most important thing to her. She was a matriarch in the truest sense, providing guidance, support, and unconditional love to her family. Her faith was a guiding light that she shared generously with her loved ones.
Margaret McDonough will be remembered as a woman of unwavering faith and boundless love. Her legacy will live on in the hearts of those she touched and her memory will be cherished forever. As we bid farewell to this remarkable woman, we take comfort in knowing that she is now at peace, reunited with her beloved Martin and other family members who have gone before her. May she rest in the eternal love of our Lord.
Visitation will be held from 3:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Friday, November 7, 2025 at Cargain Funeral Homes, Inc., 10 Fowler Avenue, Carmel, NY.
A Mass of Christian burial to honor and celebrate Margaret's life will take place at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, November 8, 2025 at St. James the Apostle Church, 14 Gleneida Avenue, Carmel, NY.
Following the Mass, Margaret will be escorted to her final resting place alongside her beloved husband, Martin, at Raymond Hill Cemetery in Carmel, NY.
