Mary A. Sutherland, 90, passed away January 29, 2026. Beloved wife of the late John (Jack) Sutherland; loving mother of Ian (Nicole Clifton) Sutherland, Steve (Sheila) Sutherland, the late Janet (Keith) Tuttle, the late Jacqueline "Jackie", and Beth (Walter Bicking) Sutherland-Bicking; proud grandmother of Jason Cairy, Kristen (Joseph) Figliulo, Alex Dark, Meghan (Ryan Clausen) Sutherland, Colleen (Luke Jandl) Sutherland, Andrew (Ashley Murphy) Sutherland, Abby (Ian) Georgeson, Amy Bicking, Faith (Casey) Kotecki, and great-grandmother of Henry Cairy, Simon Figliulo, Miles Figliulo, Bridget Figliulo, and Felix Jandl
Mary Adelaide Sutherland, known affectionately as "Mary Ad" to her close friends and family, was born in the Bridgeport neighborhood of Chicago. Her loving parents instilled in her and her two older siblings a strong sense of independence, intellectual curiosity, reading, and above all, proper manners. Mary met her husband Jack in high school and the couple married soon after graduation. Both from humble beginnings, they worked together to achieve career success for Jack, who became a respected executive at Continental Coffee. As Jack worked, Mary took the lead in raising their five children, Ian, Steve, Janet, Jackie, and Beth.
Jack's work led the couple to travel the world, particularly in coffee-producing countries from Mexico to Brazil, leading Mary to develop a lifelong love of travel that led her to Europe, Iceland, Russia, and even as far as Australia. An avid golfer and lover of the hottest possible weather, Mary spent her retirement after Jack's passing snowbirding between Arizona and Chicago and continuing her world travels, always with a book, and later her e-reader, tucked into her bag because what was life if you weren't reading? She loved researching her family history and genealogy, and was an ace at crossword puzzles, Jeopardy, and any game involving language, trivia, or history.
Mary loved a lively discussion, whether political, religious, or philosophical, and encouraged that passion in her children and grandchildren. A loving mother of five, grandmother of nine, and great-grandmother of five, Mary extended that love to children in need, from sponsoring underserved children in coffee-producing countries, to giving faithfully to Chicago's Mercy Home for Boys and Girls throughout her life.
