Mary Ellen Tihlarik-McCarthy passed peacefully into God's arms on October 22, 2025, at 2:04 p.m. at St. Elizabeth Hospital in Appleton, Wisconsin, following a brief illness. She was born to Clemene and Eugene McCarthy at St. Paul Hospital on July 31, 1951.
Mary was surrounded by her adoring children, their spouses, and her cherished grandchildren, along with family near and far who offered prayers, blessings, and heartfelt support. Her beloved sister, Diane, flew in to join hands in prayer at her bedside, bringing light, hope, and peace. Surrounded by the love of her family and friends in that sacred moment, it was clear that Mary was deeply loved, profoundly cared for, and at peace.
Mary was a beacon of light, love, and warmth-a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and best friend-whose presence illuminated every life she touched. She leaves behind a legacy of compassion, joy, and unwavering devotion.
Mary is survived by her beloved children: Frederick Dale Tihlarik Jr. (Nicole), Jen Lorraine Hanel (Joe), Taylor Brixten Sell (Brian), and Jeff Allen Tihlarik (Christy). She also leaves behind her treasured grandchildren-Mariah, Dantè, Andrè, Olivia, Madalyn, Nealy, Leela, Jax, and Knox-who were the joy and light of her life. Each carries a piece of her spirit: her laughter, her kindness, and the warmth of her love-a living reflection of the soul she poured into all of them. Mary also leaves behind her cherished siblings and many family members and friends whom she held close to her heart.
She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Frederick Dale Tihlarik Sr., her parents, her cherished dog, Mable, and many dear family members and friends.
Though her absence leaves a void that brings tears, her light will continue to inspire and guide us. She will paint the bright pinks in the morning skies, bring forth the sun in a burst of color, and twinkle among the evening stars, always watching over us. Her light and peace live on in the sparkling eyes of her children and grandchildren, in the brightest flowers of spring, and in the memory of her laughter and her remarkable ability to find hope even in the darkest moments. Mary's compassion, love for family, faith, and passion will continue to guide us and inspire us to share those gifts with others on our journey.
The family would like to thank the caring ICU doctors and nurses at St. Elizabeth Hospital for their kindness and support during this time.
The family will be holding a celebration of life at a later date. Additional details to follow.
