Mary Mae Wessells, 76, of Sicklerville, New Jersey, quietly departed this life on October 22, 2025, at Virtua Memorial Hospital in Voorhees, New Jersey.

She was born on December 24, 1948, in Nassawadox, Virginia, the daughter of the late John Lee Taylor and Neomia Virginia Taylor (Johnson). Mary was the beloved wife of the late James Wessells Sr., to whom she was married for 50 years until his passing on March 3, 2019.

In the late 1960s, Mary moved to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and later settled in Sicklerville, New Jersey, in 1987, where she lived the remainder of her life. She was admired and cherished by many during her long career, working more than 20 years at the U.S. Postal Service (30th Street, Philadelphia, PA) and later retiring after over 20 years of service at Ancora Psychiatric Hospital in Hammonton, NJ.

Mary was a devoted woman of faith. From her childhood at Bethel Baptist Church in Franktown, Virginia, to her membership at Mt. Lebanon Baptist Church in Philadelphia, she remained steadfast in her spiritual journey. She was also deeply involved in charitable efforts, faithfully collecting and donating clothing to local charities throughout the year to help those in need.

Known for her thoughtfulness and generosity, Mary was always ready to lend a helping hand or offer words of encouragement. Her kindness touched countless lives.

She leaves to cherish her memory four children: Angel Graham of Maricopa, AZ; Donell Singleton (Jonathan) of Monroe, NY; James Wessells Jr. of Sicklerville, NJ; and Marcus Wessells (Nicole) of Sicklerville, NJ. She is also survived by thirteen grandchildren, eight great grandchildren, two brothers, Calvin Taylor (Gloria) of Eden, MD and Preston Taylor; her brothers in law William Wessells (Phyllis) of Virginia Beach, VA and Tyrone Wessells of Accomac, VA; and her sister in law Odelsie Wessells of Accomac, VA.

Mary was preceded in death by her beloved husband, James Wessells Sr.; her brothers Charles, John, and Joseph Taylor; and her sister Rev. Sudie A. Davis Hemsley.

She also leaves behind a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends who will forever treasure her memory.

Family and friends are invited to celebrate her life at Gospel Temple Church, 18510 Gospel Temple Rd, Melfa, VA 23410, on Saturday, November 1, 2025, at 2:00 PM. Viewing will begin at 1:00 PM. Following the service, interment will take place at Wharton's Cemetery, Metompkin, Virginia. A repast will follow back at Gospel Temple Church.
