Mary was born at Cedars of Lebanon Hospital in
Los Angeles, California April 29, 1937. Mary grew up in Glendale, California graduating from Hoover High School in 1955. She attended the University of California at Los Angeles for part of her freshman year. Mary started teaching Sunday school at age 12 and continued teaching for over 50 years. Mary went to work for Security First National Bank at their Glendale Office where she worked for just short of ten years. While working there she met her future husband, Doug. It was not love at first because there was some work-related friction between them (in fact Mary did not like Doug). They began secretly dating in violation of bank policy and subsequently the dislike was overcome when they eloped to Las Vegas on October 17, 1964. The elopement weekend cost them less than $100 (an inexpensive wedding!). That was 61 years ago. They had two daughters, Deborah was born on April 19, 1966, and Patricia on November 25, 1967. They lived in Glendale and later La Crescenta, California for 37 years, raising their family while Doug continued to work for the bank. Along the way they gained a son-in-law (Cory), a granddaughter (Jennifer), a grandson (Dakota) and a grandson-in-law (Steven). The granddaughter and grandson-in-law had their great granddaughter (Alice). Mary worked part time and then full-time as a church secretary and later as an office manager for a small educational media firm. They had a family vacation each year. One of their vacation highlights was the year Mary had a glass of wine for dinner. After dinner they went for a walk and Mary tried walking on a log and kept falling off. To which their daughters yelled, mommy is "drunk". On another vacation they were in Salt Lake City and Doug decided they should walk to a theater that had the first Star Wars movie. When they left the theater there was heavy rain. Doug thought they should run for it and got soaking wet in the process only to find out that had they waited 10 minutes the rain would be over. Doug was never able to live it down to this day. Doug was displaced from the bank in 1989 which started an adventure that lasted for 22 years of RVing around the country. During the time Doug caddied professional golf with Mary walking the course during play, Doug & Mary volunteered with a Christian grad school, when at home Doug & Mary volunteered at spring training baseball at Surprise Stadium. During this time, they completed visiting all 50 states and towing a 5th wheel 140,000 miles. During their travel years they moved to Del Webb's Sun City Grand in Surprise, Arizona in 2004. After Mary was diagnosed with Alzheimer's they decided to sell their home and move to Fellowship Square in Surprise in June 2018. Mary moved to memory care at Fellowship Square in November of 2018 and remained there for over seven years till Mary's passing on November 25, 2025. One thing they learned in their marriage was that a non-sports fan (Doug) and a football nut (Mary) can survive if they have two televisions. Mary was known for her smile, a sincere kindness to all and was always willing to help where needed. Mary had a long-term friend (Sue) who Mary claimed she could not remember life without. Mary was a devout chocoholic and had an unabashed love for dark chocolate. Doug and Mary both had a sincere love for Jesus for their whole marriage. What Doug had was the best mate that any man could wish for and a lady he could not help falling in love with.
To My Wife, when we get to the end of our lives together, the house we owned, the cars we drove, the things we had won't matter. What will matter is that I had you and you had me. To send flowers to the family or plant a tree in memory of Marylee Maddocks, please visit our floral store.
