Dr. Matilal "Mati" Sarker

Dr. Matilal "Mati" Sarker, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and esteemed chemist, passed away at home on December 13, 2024, surrounded by family and friends in Port Matilda, PA. Born on February 1, 1954, in the village of Sashikar in the Faridpur district of Bangladesh, Mati's warmth and intelligence touched everyone he met.
At a time when it was unfathomably difficult for someone to leave Bangladesh for a special life, one of the few opportunities was through education and advanced training. Mati's brilliance in the classroom paved the way for the opportunity to come to the United States. His path first led him to Dhaka University where he earned both his bachelor's and master's degrees in 1977 and 1979. He then made his way to the United States in 1982, where he was accepted to Vanderbilt University and later completed his PhD in Physical Chemistry in 1987. This was a monumental achievement for his family.
Mati was a man whose roots remained close to his heart throughout his life. He proudly established a scholarship program for Sashikar College in Bangladesh, ensuring that the bright young minds of his hometown had the opportunity to chase their dreams just as he had.
Those who knew Mati will recall his diverse interests that ranged from the tranquility of fishing to the meticulous skill of carpentry, and from the art of photography to the joy of videography. Mati is survived by his devoted wife of 39 years, Manika Sarker, his sons, Upal and Avik Sarker, and his precious granddaughter, Isabel. Mati's legacy is not only evident in his professional accomplishments but also in the quiet strength and support he provided to his loved ones.
