Matilda Butzbach Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jul. 10, 2024.
Matilda Ann Butzbach, known affectionately as Tillie, passed away peacefully on June 3, 2024, in Colorado Springs, CO, at the age of 92. Born on June 28, 1931 in Oakland, California, Tillie lived a vibrant and fulfilling life, marked by her unwavering kindness and generosity.

Tillie was the beloved wife of the late Eugene Butzbach and a cherished mother to Jerry and Ed Butzbach, and Judy Arzaga. She was a loving mother-in-law to Linda and Richard, and a doting grandmother to Hailey and Ashley Arzaga. Her lovely family extended beyond her immediate circle to include several nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews who felt her love and support. Her husband Gene, brothers Paul and Larry Tehero, and sister Candida Tenchiera preceded her in death.

Those who knew Tillie will remember her for her quick smile and warm embrace, a testament to her kind and generous spirit. Her sense of humor brought joy to many, making her a beloved figure in her community and family.

Tillie had a passion for life that was evident in her hobbies. She and Gene enjoyed traversing the United States in their motorhome, creating lasting memories together. An expert seamstress, Tillie's sewing machine was a constant in her life, contributing to projects for her family and charitable endeavors, such as making hundreds of dresses for the Dress A Girl Around the World organization. Her handcrafted blankets warmed foster children and friends alike, and she knitted countless scarves for residents at her senior living facility.

Her commitment to youth activities was profound, supporting her sons in Cub Scouts, continuing her lifelong involvement in Girl Scouts, and cheering on her sons in baseball and granddaughters in softball. Tillie was always the biggest fan and the greatest supporter, offering love and unconditional support that touched all aspects of her family's lives.

A memorial service to celebrate Tillie's life will be held on July 13, 2024, at 11 am at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery & Funeral Center, located at 1051 Harder Road, Hayward, CA 94542. Any flowers sent will need to arrive by July 12 by 4 pm. A reception with appetizers and a margarita will follow at mom's favorite restaurant Casa Orozco at 7995 Amador Valley Blvd, Dublin, CA at 1pm.

Tillie's presence will be deeply missed, but her spirit and legacy will forever be remembered and cherished by those who were fortunate enough to know her.

Tillie was truly a kind and gentle woman. Any time I was around I was always greeted with a big hug and "how are you doing honey"? She was a kind soul making dresses for needy and just being generous. This is who she was right to her soul. We will miss her dearly.

I will always remember the bright and cheerful smile on Tillie“s face any time I saw her. Just a kind and friendly woman. She will be missed by anyone who had the pleasure to meet her. Our condolences.

Auntie Tillie picked up my Mom, Betty Tehero, from the Hayward Hospital, days after the birth of my baby brother, Stephen. I stood in the front seat between Aunt Tillie and Grandma Marcelina, and watched over the front seat as Mom, Stevie and Grandmother DeeDee sat in the back, taking my new baby brother home for the first time.

My mother-in-law passed away about a month ago. Her services are this weekend. I wanted to share her obituary, which was written mainly by my beautiful wife, Judy Butzbach-Arzaga. I wish you could be there on Saturday to hear from others all the wonderful qualities she possessed. Tillie took great care and affection for her husband, daughter, and two sons. She also vouched for me more than a few times when it counted.

As Judy prepares for her services, I see many beautiful photos memorializing her life. The evidence of how much respect that family has for each other is reflected in this single photo of Tillie. I have to share almost all the pictures I see in obituaries look like afterthoughts. After so many years on this earth, I wondered why they could not find a better photo. I swear, when I see them, In my mind, I try to photoshop some of them! But this photo of my mother-in-law captures her inner strength, beauty, and love of life and family. I don't want to gloss over her having a little bite! Tillie lived with our family for six months during COVID-19 and again these last six months of her life. She has a knack for calling me out on things I would be thinking! I would shrug it off without giving her the satisfaction that my mother-in-law was right! She knows now, in the world of the all-knowing, that she had me pegged!

I'm thrilled that Tillie is now with her husband and other friends and family. I look forward to seeing her again. Hopefully, not too soon.

I loved being around mom at Christmas. We would spend the whole day baking goodies, and she would share the trick to making the perfect peanut brittle. I loved the way would laugh at the movie "Christmas Vacation" like it was the first time she had watched it!
