Heading into this world at the beginning of a new year, Mrs. Matline Steele Cox was born on January 30, 1930, in Conway SC to the late Luther Steele and the late Teena Cochran Steele.. She peacefully entered eternal rest on November 1, 2025, at her home.
Matline's mother passed away when she was just seven years old. From that moment, her father - with the loving help of her Aunt Callie Steele Bellamy - raised her and her siblings to know and trust in the Lord. That strong spiritual foundation guided her throughout her life and shaped the woman she became.
She attended Horry County Schools and was a proud graduate of the Class of 1950 at Whittimore High School.
On December 13, 1950, Matline was united in holy matrimony to Mr. Pearley Cox, Sr., who preceded her in death. To this blessed union, six children were born. Matline and Pearley shared 50 years of marriage, built on love, faith, and family. Together, they created a home filled with discipline, laughter, and devotion.
At an early age, she accepted Christ as her personal Savior and joined Greater St. James A.M.E. Church, where she faithfully attended until her health no longer allowed her to do so. She had a strong faith in God and lived each day trusting in His will. Matline was a stern and direct woman, never afraid to speak her mind or stand on what she believed. If it wasn't done her way, it wasn't done right. Beneath her quiet strength and sturdy nature beat a heart that loved unconditionally -she cared deeply for her family, friends, and everyone she met.
Matline worked for many years as a domestic housekeeper, a job that perfectly matched her passion for cleanliness and organization. She took great pride in her work and believed that everything should be done in decency, order, and with care. Her home was a reflection of her spirit: spotless, warm, welcoming, and filled with love.
She also cherished spending time with her family. Whether it was joking around, sharing stories, or simply enjoying each other's company, family was always at the center of her heart.
Matline was a faithful member of the Willing Workers Chapter #323, Order of the Eastern Star, she was the last charter member. She took pride in her years of service and was always enthused to bring in new members.
Matline was the last surviving sibling of her family and the oldest living cousin, in her generation. She stood as the true matriarch of the family - a pillar of wisdom and strength. Her presence united generations, and her legacy will continue to guide those who follow in her footsteps.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Pearley Cox Sr, two sons Jimmy Cox and Pearley Cox Jr., great grandson A'sharr Cox. Her siblings; Sylvester Steele, Robert Steele, Mable Johnson, Raymond Steele, Halistene Bellamy, Carrie Sarvis and Gatleaner Jenrette. 7 brothers-in-law and 5 sisters- in- law.
Left to cherish her precious memory are her loving children; Dennis Cox (Annie) of Bucksport SC, Priscilla Spivey (Erwin) of Loris SC, Marlean Cox of Conway SC and Lisa Cox ( Daryll) of Charlotte NC.
For a time, she opened her home and heart to two nieces, (Bessie Johnson and Dwaun "Cookie" Cochran) nurturing them and guiding them as a mother would, leaving a lasting impact on their lives.
9 Grandchildren; Teresa Dozier (whom she raised as her own) ( Christopher), Timothy Cox ( Stephanie),Yoshida Sherman ( Lloyd), Allen Cox, Courtney Reese, Chuckena Bessant, Jazzary Bowman, Anthony Spivey, and Jarius Cox. 14 great grands and 2 great great grands. She was also blessed with 7 bonus grandchildren and a host of bonus great-grands who loved her dearly.
A host of nieces, nephews, cousins, church family, and friends who will forever hold her close in their hearts.
