David Michael Cox, 58, of Groveland passed away at home in his sleep on Tuesday, November 4, 2025. Born in Boston, he was the son of the late William and Marilyn (Sheehy) Cox.
Dave spent his early years growing up in Lawrence and Andover. After his younger twin siblings were born in 1979, he and his family moved to Haverhill. He graduated from Central Catholic High School in Lawrence in 1985 before taking some classes at Merrimack College. After leaving college, Dave ultimately found his passion working in loss prevention until he was accepted into the police academy. Being a police officer was his life-long dream as he loved helping others. He worked as a Haverhill Police Officer from 1998 to 2016 when an on-the-job injury necessitated early retirement. Once retired, Dave helped take care of his mother after her 2017 ALS diagnosis until she succumbed to the disease in 2019. He had recently returned to his loss prevention roots and was proud of his work.
In his younger days, Dave traveled extensively abroad with his family. An avid gun collector, he spent his free time at the shooting range when he was able. He loved his three nephews dearly and had a unique sense of humor. In his free time, he relished reading military survival books, indulging his sweet tooth, and spending time with his 6-year-old Bull Mastiff dog, Riker, who was his constant companion.
Dave was predeceased by his mother, Marilyn (Sheehy) Cox; his father, William J. Cox, Jr; his uncle, John Sheehy, and his aunt Kathleen (Sheehy) Wholley.
He is survived by his brother, Aaron Cox and his wife Nicole Sammartino of Amesbury, his sister, Alisha Doyle and her husband Timothy of Andover; his nephews Ryan Cox, Robert Sammartino-Cox and Brendan Doyle; his uncle Michael Wholley; cousins Julee Sheehy, John Sheehy III, Griffin Wholley and Clayton Wholley.
In lieu of flowers, Dave would have liked donations made to ALS Association at www.als.org as that was an organization near to his heart after his mother's diagnosis and ultimate passing.
Family and friends are respectfully invited to attend visiting hours on Thursday, November 13, 2025, from 4:00 – 7:00 p.m. at Cataudella Funeral Home, 126 Pleasant Valley St., Methuen. Funeral services will be held at the conclusion of visiting hours at 7:00 p.m. in the funeral home chapel.
